Hey all!

So I am getting my Midline on Monday and I will be starting IV Rocephin once per day. (I believe it is 2 grams)

I was wondering which probiotics people here take -- and how many.

I am trying to research probiotics with more than one strain. I currently take culturelle. I want to get a second probiotic to add to the culturelle.

PB8 and Theralac are looking pretty good. They both have many strains -- but PB8 is a lot cheaper. I wonder why.

I am also looking at Natures Way Primadopholus. They have 35 billion capsules and 100 billion packets!

Thanks in advance!

-Amanda

Actually i want to know what people are taking too.

I only take one from walgreens.

I know Theralac, UltraFlora are supposedly really good. I need to get some.

BTW Amanda what is a midline is that same as PICC line?

Threelac warns to not use while on antibiotics, which, oddly, is often why you need a probiotic!

After deciding to risk it, I feel fine so far.

But I have also wondered about which one people have had the most success with.

Good luck with your treatment!

I take Theralac and so far I love it. Just bumped up to 2 capsules per day (one in AM one in PM), since I upped my Ceftin doseage.

At the beginning I tried a couple different probiotics. One by some Japanese Dr. I forget at the moment, gave me horrible cramping and headaches that were unbearable. I felt so sick on them. Dr Ohira's? They were gelcaps, liquid form.

Another was a regular health food store brand that didn't seem to be very effective, but I can't say as I did any scientific testing hehe.

I just jumped on Theralac as soon as I found out about it, as it is considered one of the best. Hubby says he buys it from Amazon.com, which is a little cheaper than buying direct from the Theralac site.

I don't know much, but I have been taking a probiotic by Ultraceuticals called "Critical Care", which has 50 billion organisms per capsule, all lactobacillus and bifido species.

When I started Omnicef recently, I suddenly had big time pooping problems, and at the suggestion of several on this site added a probiotic with Saccharomyces boulardii, and this has helped a lot.

More information on Saccharomyces can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharomyces_boulardii

Note that this is a yeast. Whole Foods have some capsules that are just of this species.

Thats what my brother said that Theralac is not good to take with ABX because your liver processes whole bunch of good bacteria and then the ABX it overworks it.

Is that true?

I use Custom Probiotics formula CP-1. It has 7 strains, 50 billion organisms per capsule. I take 2 am on empty stomach and 2 before bed. They are available online. They really work for me. I also take one saccharomyces boulardii before bed. My doctor call that a happy fungus, beats out the bad yeast. I get most of my supplements fro iHerb.com.

Yeah -- I am really confused basically.

I really wonder the difference between theralac and PB8. They seem similar in my eyes. But I could be wrong.

Also -- I have to open the capsules because I can not swallow pills due to swallowing issues from cranial nerve damage. I hope I will still get the benefits. I did this with culturelle when I was on Orals and it was fine.

If you open the capsules on Theralac, you're wasting your $$. Theralac is enterric coated, designed to break down in your GI tract, not in your stomach (and get killed off when you eat).

If you took 6 or 9 PB8 a day (2 or 3 pills 3 times a day), your monthly cost would be about the same, as with Theralac, you'd only need 1 a day.

Oh man....I don't know what to do about this.

I know they sell powder forms of probiotic -- perhaps I can get one of those. Since those probably are made to withstand some sort of stomach action.

I have looked into metagenics since they have a powder.

I used to have horrible yeast issues (on and off antibiotics for 5 years)

Anyway, I am currently on bicillin shots which some say are easier on your stomach anyway, but I have found that if I take 1 VSL #3 and 4 florastor a day (and of course carefully monitor my diet) my yeast problems are completely under control (knock on wood!)

So - I say VSL#3 and florastor are my probiotics of choice.

My LLMD loves theralac but for me I didn't get much benefit from it

Good luck [Smile]

I use the brand metagenics myself with great success, had constant diarea for months, now I'm pretty regular with even taking two oral antibiotics, and magnesium every day. I guess it will vary between people, but hey, what works for me, works.

I forget what the names are, but there is one that has 60 billion per capsule, and I only have to take one every other day, so a bottle of 30 last two months.

They have the powder too, so that might be good for you if you can't swallow pills but I have yet to try the power, but have had the pill form of the same name that worked well for me also, but was two pills a day instead of one every other so I went back to the 60 billion one.

Because it doesn't work very well!

YOu get what you pay for with Theralac and only need one per day in most cases... as long as you are following the diet faithfully.

Florastor is juat about essential to stop certain strains of C.difficile. Jarrow probiotics were recommended to me by my LLD along with the Florastor. The Jarrow esp is designed to break down in your intestines where its needed.

Some Rx plans will pay for Florastor if you get your doc to write an Rx for it saying you must have it.

What do you mean by take WITH?? You should never take a probiotic at the SAME TIME as the abx because the abx will KILL the probiotic.

But you MUST replenish your gut with probiotics since every time you take an ANTIbiotic, you are killing the natural PRObiotics in your gut.

Always take the two items TWO HOURS apart.

I took 2 theralac every day when I was on antibiotics and continued at 1/day after I went off & started with the bionic 880, but I still got a huge dieoff reaction once I started Progurt.

I haven't tried VSL #3, but heard good things
