I don't believe to have HHV-6 or anything but EBV (high IgG titers) based on my test results. I have a doc considering putting me on anti-viral therapy (Valtrex). The dose would be 1,000 mg 3x day.

I'm currently on Abx treatment too.

Has anyone seen significant improvement in symptoms with this anti-viral? I'm disappointed by my progress on Abx for almost 7 months of combined treatment so far. I want to leave no rock unturned as long as my treatment is safe.

Does it help I don't have high titers on other viral tests? I seem to have some benefit from Olive Leaf Extract so I'm wondering if I could get more from this.

My doc says the anti-virals are benign drugs for the most part with minimal side effects.

Be informed...weigh the risks:

http://www.healthsquare.com/newrx/val1474.htm

Look at this from another angle:

Could there be any advantage of EBV re-emerging?

"EBV looks to involve a protein called LMP2.

"The Lmp2 protein is part of a cellular structure called the proteasome, which degrades proteins and

***helps the immune system's killer T-cells learn the difference between the body and invaders.***"

"Latent membrane proteins 2 (LMP2) is a subdominant antigen of EBV."

Think also about what happens when we have mono...sleepy, right?

Does that virus impact melatonin and acetylcholine levels needed for NREM and REM sleep?

With the good, also comes the bad and the risks.
This is like TNF alpha and Il 1B...while these cytokines DO have MANY benefits, in EXCESS, they will destroy the pancreas cells...for one.

I wish I had access to this:

"An Epstein-Barr virus protein associated with cell growth transformation

interacts with a tyrosine kinase"

EBV and staph:

"Pretreatment with the P3HR-1 substrain of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) inhibited approximately 85% of the DNA stimulation induced by Staphylococcus aureus in human B lymphocytes."

(I think the above might have happened to my daughter i.e., EBV re-emerged as a result of staph aureus which can attack the thyroid -> hyperthyroidism.)

Tough decision! VERY complicated.

Seekhelp....I took Valtrex for 3 mos. before they even found the Lyme. I was goint to FFC and they had found all the viruses. I have six.

I did feel better the 2nd month, can't remember the dosage but I know it wasn't 1000 mg. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I have taken Valtrex 1G 3x a day and my early antigen antibodies went down and I felt great; better than ever!

Seekhelp,

I thought you've just finished your first month of combined tx with a ILADS-member LLMD and that before that you were on single abx? Still, 7 months is a very short time to treat if you have been ill for years. While it's important to consider what other co-infections you may have, it's also important to know this may take longer to see progress.

If you have tests for other chronic stealth infections, it is important to have those done by certain labs and to specifications detailed by the organizations listed in this thread:

I would encourage EVERY person who has received a lyme diagnosis to get the following tests.

I keep telling people who ask for herbal anti-virals that LOMATIUM completely wiped out my herpes simplex lip sores.

EBV i think is in the herpes family, n'est-ce pas?

LOMATIUM is an herb in the parsley family that grows in the dry western plains. A bottle of extract doesn't cost much. I've bought 3 different brands from web sites.

The anti-viral drugs are very expensive, aren't they?

It could be worth trying.
