Is one better than the other and what difference does it make? I would think a picc would get to your brain more than IV, but just guessing.

Anyone that is on one or the other, or has been? ANY info would be so helpful. Thanks!

It has to be a picc? Enlighten me please. I thought you could do Rocephin with just a regular IV. I'm sure someone I knew did.

Rocephin can be done IM (Intra-muscular) or IV.

I am not sure about PICC as opposed to a short line (periphrial). I would think that they would be equally as effective? A PICC line goes to the central arterty and dumps at the heart. A short line empties into the blood stream.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Freelift, that's what I thought, but there must be some difference or why would one get the picc versus IM?

IM hurts like hell. IM is said to be ALMOST effective as IV....maybe noyt quite, snd there are less complications associated with IM.

IM Rocephin that is. IM bicillin isn't so bad.

Actually, I screwed up on my last post. I'm talking about a picc or IV, not IM. I di Im bicillin. It seems IV would be simpler than a picc, so what would be the benefit of having a picc?

Sorry, my LLMD keeps telling me I need to do IV Rocephin and just trying to learn a few things.

in my situation, i have done iv rocephin off and on for several years now. they tried to insert a picc line 3 different times, 2 of those were under dopplar, yet they were unable to get it to thread.

this time around, i am on week number 17 of iv rocephin. we were told that usually if they expect you to be on meds. long term, it is easier to have a picc line for the patient.

which does make alot of sense, as i have to get stuck every 3-5 days, sometimes up to 6 times just to start a new iv. as my veins are alredy bad and the rocephin is really harsh on your veins.

hope this helped.

I am getting stuck once per week and on IV Rocephin. It was my choice to have the short line and not a PICC.

I had a PICC 1st time around and HATED it. It was uncomfortable. I worried all of the time and 8 weeks of this worring was not good.

I love the short line! I don't even feel it and every 4 days I get to pull it and have a 3 day rest.

I have good veins and this makes it easy for me. One stick and we are in and ready to go. So much better in my experience.

Actually, Rocephin is not that harsh on your veins or you could not do it through a short line.

If you were doing IV Vanco, IV doxy, etc. they ARE caustic and can only be administered through a PICC or Port......no short line.

i do not know about others, but in my case, this drug has been very harsh on my veins. this is also what has been told to us by our llmd.

i have numerous veins that still after a couple years cannot be used due to the rocephin.

Thanks so much freelift and daphne, you have been very helpful!

daphne,

I did not mean to undermine your experience. I hope that you did not take it that way.

Best,

oh, not at all... please don't worry about that.

i just wanted to clarify that this is just my experience with it. i also know 3 others who are on iv doxy, and have had fewer problems with such thigs as hardenning of the viens etc.. as i have had on iv rocephin. guess it can be very individualized.

Thats odd, because doxy is VERY caustic, you have to be on a PICC or port in order to receive it IV. You or I could not recieve doxy through weekly sticks and short (periphrial) lines.

The PICC allows the medication to go through the vein through the plastic tubing that is threaded through the vein and empties at the heart. That is why the doxy is not hardening their veins.

I will have to ask about the potential of Rocephin and hardening my veins at my appt. tomorrow.

Yeesh, I sure hope not.

they are doing the exact same perihrial line as i am, it is NOT a picc or port.

but i have read and heard of this before, it truly is not that uncommon.

i just cannot handle doxy, thar is the first med we tied. or i would still be doing doxy.

anyway good luck at your appt.
