I just started my official treatment on the 21st. I am currently on 400mg Doxy per day. On the 24th I started to herx I believe. Soreness all over. It's getting worse every day but my breasts started being tender on that day also. They are getting more and more sore and swollen. Is this a normal part of a herx? What causes this crazy pain? It's pretty intense.
Thank you.

I wish I could tell you.
Aside from the usual questions of are you sure you're not pregnant, as that ccan be a sign, and do your breasts usually get sore before your period, I don't know what causes it.
I don't know if it has to do with Lyme and company, but I get what the doctor calls a benign mass in my breast that hurts like crazy.
They did a mammogram on it to be sure it wasn't cancerous, and it wasn't.
It just up and went away, then came back again about a year later,
I don't know what causes it, and neither does the doctor, but I imagine the stupid little 'chetes could be to blame.

My boobs hurt also-bad-especially where they meet my armpits-there are masses in my breasts, but they say it is not cancer.
I hope someone responds to this so they can help us.

How is your prolactin level?

oh yeah, big time. i get so sore i can barely wear a bra and i need to.
i hurt so bad under my arms and toward my back that when i massage it, i almost cry.
if it's fibro, man, it hurts....but i know it's lyme.

Wow, I forgot - I had that, too, so bad. It helped with I went off coffee and I think the magnesium really helps, too. Fish oil, as well.
Lyme really does a number with inflammation, edema and messed up hormones. All three of those together can be a crushing pain - and it can move around the body without notice.
You are on liver and adrenal support supplements, right ? Off of caffeine? On magnesium?
If all that is yes, you might also get a full body massage and lymph massage to get stuff moving on out.

I think the word "breast" would be more appropriate and would look and sound much better in the subject line.
Just a thought...... Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
Could it be swollen lymph nodes?
Posted by Leelee (Member # 19112) on :
I have had this problem for about 20 years. About as long as I think I have had Lyme (undiagnosed until March 17, 2009).
I have been to many gynecologists, and a specialist in breast diseases, but no one could help me. The mammograms showed nothing.
When I told my LLMD about my problem at my first appointment he told me it was swollen lymph nodes. I absolutely believe him. The pain sometimes feels like it is traveling under my armpit and down my arm too.

I've had this for over two years.
It is slowly getting better with biaxin.

I have this same issue. I would get major inflammation and hardening of my breast tissue and inflammation of my arm pits and upper back near my arms.
I recently stopped my abx (B/c I was goinng to a beach resort). I started taking serrapeptase after researching fibro cystic breast issues. This past cycle, i had not swelling and very little pain.
Now, I don't know if its stopping the abx or the serrapeptase. But i think i remember having breast problems while off abx in the past.
Good luck, i know how painful it is.

My breasts sometimes get sore before my period. I am 2 weeks away from my next one. They have never started hurting this far out. It's usually a couple days before.
Some of you say you have this problem but is it only during herxing or all the time?
I am not sure what a prolactin level is but I should ask my doctor about this. I won't see him again til June. Hopefully this will end by then.
I am not having a huge problem with under arm pain. It's just the breasts. I know that the lymph nodes in my neck are swollen all the time. The two under my ears are hard. I need to get one of those drainage massages.
My supplements are in shipment now but I am currently taking are coq10 with fish oil, mag, b complex and quercetin. The ones in shipment are Milk Thistle, CoQ10, PB-8, Lactobacillus, Acetyl L-Carnitine & Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Cordyceps. I just started B12 injections yesterday.
Thanks everyone.

I have this, but not nearly as bad as when I first started treatment. I also had some lumps but they disappeared ?? and ultrasound showed nothing. If I remember correctly, my LLMD said lyme likes to settle into milk ducts. Seems to be a cozy little nest for them. The pain and lumps have subsided with treatment. (I also had breast discharge before treatment - hormones probably completely out of wack.)
Posted by mazou (Member # 15319) on :
I had it further on in treatment. I think it's messed up hormones.
Posted by CD57 (Member # 11749) on :
Check your progesterone. Mine hurt until I started supplementing with progesterone days 12-27 of cycle. No more pain.

Drinking a lot of coffee would make my breasts SO sore.
Then sometimes they would also get really firm, hard areas that was just tissue that gets hard from too much caffeine.
I went to the gyno and they said it was fine and was from caffeine. I had been consuming more lately. Then when I stopped, they got better.
But yes, it was pretty painful.
So maybe your body isn't detoxing caffeine well if you are consuming it. So you might try cutting back on caffeine if that is applicable to you.
Posted by Tincup (Member # 5829) on :
Caffeine can cause breasts to be sore and be lumpy.
That was the reason I backed off caffeine years ago and it really helped.
I just put up a Lymph Node post for you to review. Maybe this would explain some things?
Hope it helps.

Posted by aiden424 (Member # 7633) on :
Oh, and I don't drink any caffeine.
Posted by Barby (Member # 18348) on :
Well, I guess my real question now would be, can abx mess with your hormones?
Posted by hshbmom (Member # 9478) on :
I'm surprised no one has mentioned this: anyone with Barbie boobs would be in pain, whether they had Lyme or not.
Please forgive me for my lame attempt at humor.
Do you think you could have mastitis? ...inflammation or infection due to Lyme??? ...seriously.
Posted by LymieLaura (Member # 19367) on :
OH my god I can't believe I came across this thread!
I have recently been going through this SAME thing so I feel your pain.
My boobs always got sore a couple days my period but this month I am mid cycle and they are KILLING ME.
I have been on Tetracycline for 3 weeks so I really believe it is some sort of side effect or herx.
It feels good to know that someone is going through the same thing as I am! You are not alone I would DEFINITELY say it is something to due to the meds/Lyme.
Posted by MY3BOYS (Member # 17830) on :
in attempt to answer your question about why the pain??
lyme iteslf WILL cause hormone dysregulation. the lyme bacteria like to mess up the pituitary axis, causing hormore craziness
when on abt tx, lyme can and will change forms to protect itself. apparently there are areas of the body lyme like to be, and i personally think for women breast tissue is a hide-out as so many of us have pain, and/or abnormal discharge/lactation whatever you want to call it.
lots of lyme folks seem to have gallbladder issues as well i am finding out the hard way, gallbladder must be another hide-out.
hope that helps some. for me, bio-identical progesterone has helped ALOT. out of any/all my meds hubby will make sure i have my little pink/white pills Posted by Larkspur (Member # 5131) on :
I started getting this prob a few years ago - it's terrible!!!!!
For me it has come and gone, fortunately right now it is Gone!!!
Getting hormones checked is a big first step - Lyme can def mess with hormone levels
Or - it may be you need more support for liver detox - the toxins your liver can't process get sent to fatty tissue I have heard...(boobs are fat and lymph tissue mostly)
Also - low Calcium is a frequent cause of breast pain and I think also low vit D
Supposedly on youtube the is a video showing how to perform a self lymph drainage massage on your breasts which might be helpful - I have not seen it, my lymph drainage practioner told me about it
Good luck - hope you can get this symptom to go away

you all think that's painful; can you imagine what it has been like having had breast REDUCTION, and scar tissue galore on both breasts especially one where they didn't catch all the bleeders & more surgery? ouch...
they removed 5.5 lbs. off this once barbie figure! uffda.
my boobs hurt all the time....majority of it still being from reduction surgery, and 1 boob drained 1 entire year with me going to drs. office each week. what a pain in the butt that was.
i used to rest them on my work desk or table at home! lol Posted by Barby (Member # 18348) on :

YOu need to detox, or use binders ike psyllium husk and betonite clay, added to your portocol.
You are accumulating fluids and recirculating toxins and dies off from your treatment.
I have the same problem.
Also I just found out I hav KPU, which is the inability for my body to detox naturally.
YOu may ask to be tested for Kryptopyrria.

Im right there with the rest of you.
Mine were getting sore about every 2 weeks, I could hardly put my arms down, because of armpit tenderness.
Since i have been in treatment for lyme, I have had some relief.
I think its due to the inflammation in our bodies, and the lyme plays with our hormones dont forget.

Barby, no answers from me, but I just wanted to add that I have this horrible symptom as well. I get maybe one week per month with no pain, then 2.5 weeks of huge, painful breasts and PMS hell!
I think I'll try adding Calcium per Larkspur's advice...

Hi larkspur,
I am very interested in your comments.
I am going to an herbalist this afternoon so I will specifically ask her for something to detox my liver.
Also, what is a lymph drainage practitioner? Do you know where I could locate one? I am having tons of trouble with my breasts, neck and throat glands.
Thanks!

Hi Leelee - my LLMD has me seeing 2 women in this area who are using a device called the Lymph Star Pro (the are both NHPs and one is an RN also).
They are both Lyme patients who felt that this kind of therapy is what allowed them to function again.
I have no idea how you locate a practioner in your area who uses this - it seems that different health professinals just get trained and buy it and then incorporate it into their practice...

Hi, Our patients all with FM follow across the line of breastbone have lumping. I can not even count all them. I did not know why bra hurt so bad until check up & every lump I almost hit ceiling when pushed. SO they are painful actually can follow right to jaw line or TMJ. Been told if you work on them in hot tub etc. Can get them down. Most Docs, call the lumping ALL over my body & others FM lumps. Even ID doc said that. DUH< what is that dumb answer I could have said that without paying 100.00 bucks per visit. No help. Now barely able to wear bra. So painful. Sure many know. BTW/Boobs/breast at this point in pain who cares what you call. My lumps are growing all over bod. Not to mention all backed up enlarged lymph nodes I keep getting. Will say at pain clinic very common almost all severe FMers/or Lyme co-infect.
I have had them for many a yr. More growing.
Also have heard Lyme likes to hide in breast tissue, just another spot for them to run & hide.
Take care once again not dealy but far from fun to live with. Hugggsss, to ALL in Need,Kerry

I have had this in the past as well. I know mine is from Bart !!! My arm pits and breasts would get so tender. I would have lumps too. I went to a breast specialist and had so many tests done. It only showed cystic nodules.
As soon as I started on Bart tx it went away. When I stopped Bart tx it came back with a vengence. I am in Bart tx now again and those symptoms have decreased a lot.
I also take a ton or Lymph detox and drainage supplements too.

Stacy,
What do you take for Bart? I have this same problem, but for now my LLMD is treating just the Lyme.
Also, which drainage supplements do you take? I would be interested in trying them too.
Thanks,
Leelee

yea, it's your lymph system, barb.
and if you learn to detox to where this is effectively addressed, it will be like having a mini-breast reduction.. but the resultant healthy tissue and no swelling and pain is far more attractive.
you need to detox. kidneys, colon, liver and gb (in that order, kidneys repeated) --- these are the drain pipes to the lymph system.
gotta clear those first.

I found out today that doxy cannot affect the hormones like I was hoping. So what is good for detoxing? Besides that Lymph Star. I will be taking Milk Thistle.
