Can someone please tell me why the milligrams are so low in Mag-Tab SR? It seems strange since I'm so used to seeing higher mg's in magnesium supplements.

For those of us who are on it, are we getting enough Mag by just taking a couple pills a day?

i take what i need up to 4 a day

i stop leg cramps-and back offif i get diarhea

i do it cuz it was what was in dr b guidelines

i see others talking about other mag supps but don't understand it

maybe higher quality = less dosage works

he said use it cuz it absorbs well

i find using cosamine ds i can get more relief from less mg

i have tried many cheaper ones and they just don't work for me

Hmmmm. I wonder too. That's the one I take as well.

I take one in the morning and one in the evening.

It's just too low dose IMO. People are talking about 1,000-2,000 mg daily of Mg. Why even bother with Mag-Tab SR? It would cost a FORTUNE to get that much and I'd choke on the horse-size round tablets. lol.

i buy them 1000 at a time online

Wow, I didn't know you could buy a 1,000 Lpkayak. [Smile] What site? How much? If the price was reasonable, it may be a deal. My LLMD says glycinate is the best for some reason. Dr. B feels otherwise obviously.

I believe Marnie said something about Mag Chloride being good--or the best--too....

I'm sure the Marnster will chime in...

She said many times only IV form will work to get the massive doses she wants.q

Yeah, we'd all have IVs in a perfect world...even still...mag chloride should get absorbed pretty well...

No-none here seems to have indicated this supposed low amount in a MagTab SR caplet.
84 milligrams (7mEq) of elemental magnesium per caplet.

If you do the molecular weight conversions of the other supplemental versions, it isn't so low.
The lactate version they use is Spozed to be more readily absorbed than most other Mg compounds.
My LLMD, Dr M in NH, was familiar with the product & had me taking 2 caps per day. (I still take 1 a day, if any twitching flares up.)

seek- I believe people are speaking of 1,000 to 2,000 mg (1 to 2 grams) of the compounded magnesium... (the weight of the magnesium citrate, for example) Yes?
A couple Grams of elemental Mg every day would seem to be excessive.

The main reason the yellow caplets are sorta 000-size is it's binded w/ things like microcrystalline cellulose & carnauba wax, to make it slowly dissolve in the GI tract.

This give it it's 12-hr time release characterisic... 1 of it's main selling points.
But, yeah, I wish it were atleast "rounded" more.
1 reason why I'm gonna try the glycinate version next.

I have twitching all the friggin' time. I haven't tried supp'ing with mag religiously yet but I want to give it a try. It may be just lyme-skewed thyroid function as well...

i take slow-mag. kind i found was at walgreens behind the counter. they now order it for me.

for me, i have leveled off at 3-4 tabs twice daily, and up the amt. for monthly flares.

still have some twitching but 4 tabs twice dialy for more than 2 days leads to bowel intolerance so i dont push more than that on daily basis. but works better than the other mag supps i have tried.

Wow, lots of replies...guess Mag-Tab is a hot topic thanks to Burrascano.

'Kete-tracker...you sound smart. Your answer makes me feel better about the low mg's.

I just want to be sure taking 2 Mag-Tabs a day is enough. I'm always so shaky from lyme and feel magnesium is important to calm my body down.

Don't know if this is true but I read somewhere on another forum yesterday that the reason Mag is so important to lymies is because the spirochetes feed off of it so that means we get really depleted of Mag.

The post said it's important to replace the Mag because we need it for health but you don't want to get too much since the spiro's feed off of it.

I think I read in the post this is just a theory due to the fact that lymies are usually low in Mag. I think I also read that this hasn't really been proven scientifically through studies or anything.

Any truth to what I read? If it is, sounds like we need to make sure we don't over-do it? Will be interested to hear your thoughts on this theory.

When I read all this stuff, it gets annoying. I used to get Mag IV's and was recently taking large amounts of Mag to try to feel better. Who knows!

I guess we each just have to find what makes us feel better and stick with it.

Well, many feel the body is somewhat "smart" too and reduces certain substances in the presence of infection. This is thought to happen with iron with other infections. Lyme does not appear to use iron though.

Is the body withholding mag and other minerals? I don't know but it's an interesting question...

I did the Mag Tab SR and it always worked awesome compared to other supplements, something to do with the formulation. I also did injections of magnesium sulfate 2-3x per week, just get the Rx and do the shots yourself. If your on IV, you can get magnesium IVs to do also. I took the Mag Tab SR 2x per day, you can take more to bowel tolerance.

SR = slow release.

Instead of one large oral dose (which, within a 2 hour time-frame the kidneys will "correct" because they balance the electrolytes), the idea is less with a "longer acting" feature.

Good idea, but the cells that realy need it can't get it INTO them because ATP drives Mg in.

Way too little ATP is being made in those cells. The mitochondria are "dysfunctional".

Bb is using Na for its ATPase.

We need Mg.

Na (more reactive) displaces Mg.

It will take a lot more ATP in the infected cells to drive a lot more Mg into them to displace Na.

Marnie, I just noticed your reply now! A couple questions...

What can we do to make more ATP? How do we correct the dysfunctional mitochondria?

Also, what is "Na?"

Thanks.

Posted by seekhelp (Member # 15067) on :

Na is sodium. I'll let Marnie answer the rest. [Smile]

you can search www.vrp.com for "mitochondria" and also for "ATP" and find some articles.

Same with going to the main site for the CFIDS Chronicle.
