' Hi...I recently received a positive Lyme test from Igenex, and my primary doctor wants me to start taking Amoxicillin - 500 MG - 3 times a day.
I have pretty severe Dysautonomia and am EXTREMELY SENSITIVE to meds.
I've taken Ceftin before, but had to start at 250 MG twice a day and work up to 500 MG.
My main questions are:
1) What do you all think about taking Amoxicillin for Lyme?
2) What is the lowest dose that I could start on?
From what I've heard, It is stronger than Ceftin, but easier than Doxy.
Do you think I could start out at 250 MG - 3 times a day, and then work up to 500 MG?
I'm just worried that It will be too much of a stimulant for my body, as I am super sensitive.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help and advice!!! '

Unless your doc prescribes it as 250mg then how can you "break" the dosage?
My husband did 3000mg of amoxi a day.
My neighbor's Dad (Lyme also) takes the same.
He has Insulin Dependent Diabetes and everything else
Makes his creatine levels go up.
So, ask your doc to Rx you 250mg at 6 pills per day.
That way you can ramp up slowly.
Hugs,
Geneal

I'm on 3000mg a day w/ probenecid 1500mg a day.
Probenecid is to help keep the amoxi in your system longer.

I didn't get anything from it until I went up to 4500mg a day with 1500mg Probenecid a day.
Then I herxed and it really helped me.

amox works at the right levels
blood work can monitor the level you have, should be done 2 hours after dosage

Amoxi does work but as stated at very high levels. At one point I was taking 18,000mg daily (that's not a typo) with a cyst buster and a macrolide ABX.
The only way for orals to have half a chance of passing the BBB is at super high doses.

Wow, 18,000 mg a day?
My doctor is nice and basically leaving it up to me as to whether I start at 250 mg or 500 mg 3x a day, so I just have to decide I guess.
Do you know if Amoxi would have stimulant type effects at all? (not good for me)
Is it generally less mild than Ceftin?
Thanks so much everyone!!!!!! Posted by NMN (Member # 11007) on :
I don't believe anything less than 3000 mg is worth taking for lyme. Thats from one of the most conservative of LLMD's I was under.

If your sensitive then start slow and work your
way up. I'm on 1000mg 2x a day for 2 months. I
have an appointment Monday and then we'll go up
to 3000mg a day. I have alot of trouble
tolerating meds. Doxy was working and then had
terrible gi problems and now I'm back to the
start again. This disease is so frustrating.
Every time I get ahead I have a reaction. Good
luck.

Yeah, I'm really sensitive, so we decided to start out really low and hope to work up.
Yesterday was my first dose, and i'm taking a total of 750 mg / day.
Is it true that taking yogurt and/or probiotics within 2 hours of a dose will weaken the effect of the anti-biotic?
Also, what about taking dairy with ammoxicillin?
Thanks so much for the help everyone!!!

Yes, work up. When you get to full dose get a peak level test.
I weighed under 130 when I took it and took 7500 mg per day with probenecid. You want the probenecid because it keeps the amoxy in the blood stream longer.

wow, 7500 mg per day?
I'm now up to taking 1500 mg a day (500 mg 3 times a day).
Is this enough ammoxicillin, or should i be taking more?
Thanks!!!

I'm super sensitive to everything. Amoxicillin made me profoundly fatigued the entire time I was on it. My LLMD said that was unusual, probably just my own individual reaction to it.
I found it much easier to tolerate than Ceftin, because Ceftin made me spacey and headachy. Amox made me really tired but not bad otherwise.
