How do you tell if you have regular diarrhea or c-diff diarrhea?

I am on 300 mg rifampin 2X day. Have only been taking it a couple of days.

No intestinal pain just really soft stools and getting softer each time. No foul smell. ( well, it doesn't smell like roses, but not horrible like I've heard c-diff is? )

Thanks for any info. what I've heard about this bug scares me. Any advice on how to prevent it?

If the soft stools continue - let your LLMD know about it.

I have recurring C. Diff, and have found that there is not a definitive symptom - although watery diarrhea, foul smell, abdominal pain are all hallmarks.

As for prevention - take your probiotics and be sure to take Sacchomyces Boullardi. (spelling, sorry)

Can you take the sacchomyces boullardi with diflucan or nystatin?

I have heard that you can't because the antifungals will kill the s.b. because it is a type of yeast? Thanks.

You can take the Saccharomyces when on anti-fungals -- as with probiotics, you have to stagger it and take the capsules at a time of day when you are not taking the antifungals.

I have been looking into giving myself a probiotic enema, just to get them more quickly to the areas where they are most needed. If it helps, I will post here to say so.

Yes - like kimwg said - just take them a few hours apart.

You will also want to take your probiotics a few hours apart from your antibiotics.

Staggering our meds can be a real pain, but worth it.

Do you pulse flagyl at all? Some LLMDs think that can help prevent C. Diff as well as address the cyst form of Lyme. Multiple advantages there.

Flagyl is one of the meds used to treat C. Diff so that makes sense.

Oh - one other possibility which may or may not work...

Betaine HCL.

I don't know much about this, you might post another question and ask.

My tentative understanding is that it raises the acid level in your stomach and GI tract to a level that is fairly inhospitable to C. Diff.

This makes sense given that people on stomach acid reducers are more likely to develop C. Diff.

To do the protocol, you would definitely need to get more info than I can offer - but it is another starting point.

Definitely take S. Boullardi though. That is one that is certainly helpful!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will get some of the s. boullardi for sure, I've heard it really helps.
