My Igenex Babesia microti test came back as a weak positive.

I have faint bruise-like patches on both side of the nape of my neck. My LLMD said this is frequently seen in patients with Babesia.

He hasn't started treating the Babesia yet, but my herbalist has prescribed a tincture of artemesia. I am feeling some odd things that I think might be mild herxing due to the artemesia.

I am wondering if a person can herx on artemesia if he or she really doesn't have Babesia. In other words could a healthy person herx just like a person with Babesia does?

This is a total curiosity question. [spinning smile]

My ex-boyfriend got malaria in Africa, and he said that artemesinin (not necessarily the same exact thing as artemesia tincture) made him feel high in an unpleasant way- which might be what you're describing. I know I certainly feel something like that when I take that hated drug myself, but I've presumably actually got babesia.

Leelee, sure...people have herxed on this herb. What are you "odd" herx" symptoms?

There are several hundred species of this herb, and perhaps just as many formulations. What are you taking in terms of dose, brand, species?

Sorry to ask for the homework, but it's just to try to get to the impossible apples to apples comparison.

Also see:

(Can't post this second link which has the all the species, Lymenet IT support has not figured out that parenthises in links are disallowed)

I'm not sure if it's technically a "Herx", but yes, artimesia anua (I presume that's the species you're taking; it's the one that's been shown to be effective against babesia. It may be a little hard to get. It's NOT atincture of artimesia absinthia that you want- that herb WILL make you feel "high", and may not be effective against babesia. It has other toxic effects, too, I think I remember reading. I believe that the extract of a. absinthia was kind of a "fasionable drug" ("absinthe") early in 20th century or thereabouts, but because of its toxicity fell out of favor among the artists who were into it. I may be wrong, though; however, I am sure that it is A. Anua that is good for babesia or malaria. It helped me tremendously!-- I had babesia and have lost my spleen, which is a notoriously pernicious combination; Itook high doses of artimesia anua, in addition to atovaquone, to beat the babs.

(watch out for nasty "tracking cookies" and other malware on this site though!) it requires 'adobe flash player'... which is full of holes anti-virus-wise! There should be some good music on there, though, especially if I put up the new stuff I've been hoping to put up (but can't get on...)

Cold Feet,

Thank you for any insight you can give me. [Smile]

I am taking Artemisia Annua, Hydroalcoholic extract of artemisia leaf & flowering tops. I take 30 drops 2x a day; on four days, off three days. The brand (I think) is Artann E.

My symptoms are extra shakiness and jitters. Sometimes I feel like I am on a swaying boat or a little tipsy, although I do not drink.

I have had these symptoms off and on for a few years, but they seem exaggerated with the Artemisia. I was diagnosed with Babesia, Bartonella and Lyme this spring.

I also take Dynacin and Zithromax.

Thank you so much for your help. Herbal medicine is very new to me.

actually it's not that the malaria becomes resistant but its' that your body starts to build up enzymes to detox the artemesinin out of your system.

I'm on the same 'swaying boat' experience when using artemesinin- I was calling that being 'high' but 'a little tipsy' is exactly the feeling. It only lasts a little while in my case before going away. I also can get into a bad mood if I don't watch it on some days with this drug, and I don't have that problem much these days.

Sounds like a bit of a herx of some sort.

MariaA,

Thank you for your reply. I feel reassured.
