Hi All, I have had lyme since July of 08, and was previously treated with Rocephin and then Doxy. I am now under the care of a new doctor, and we are trying Ceftin @ 2g per day, oral. I have been on this for the past 2 weeks.
The past few days, I have had breakout of itchy red spots that raise up and look just like a mosquito bite. They feel more like a hive than a bite, and seem to center on a hair folicle more often than not. They are primarily on my arms, with a couple on my shoulder as well.
I was thinking they may be an alergic reaction to the ceftin, but I have no other symptoms of alergic reaction, so not sure what to think. I have not been tested for any co-infections, but have had similar, yet smaller sores erupt at times. Those tend to look like a small pimple. These will flare up for a few hours to a day, fade and go away.
When I was initially bitten, I had similar skin eruptions, but they would act different. Those ones would go down after about an hour, but stay red and then expand into the circular rash.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Welcome to Lymenet.
I have had eruptions of skin sores many times. I don't know what caused mine.
Hopefully someone here will have some insight as I just started treatment.

These were similar to the symptoms I developed when I had a mild allergic reaction to penicillin. I would not try to "tough it out" -- rather, contact your doc.

Well after 2 weeks on oral Doxy I broke out in a rash/hives on certain parts of my body..
I had assumed it was the doxy and it was the weekend so no Dr. to contact. I stopped the doxy for 2 days and the rash went away after day one but on day 2 it returned.
My rash was not from the doxy but from some new clothing I had recently purcahsed. Got the rash after I first tried the clothing on and then again when I wore it for the first time.
It is tough because you don't know what is what sometimes. I am back on Doxy with no problem.
Hope you find out what is causing the rash/break out.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Ceftin: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; . . .

I was not able to speak with my doctor today but will be calling his office in the morning. The raised areas have gone down. Still a light red circle where some of them were, but nothing else. I had just one spot the other night, and today there were around 9,so I will call to find out what they want me to do. As a kid I had hives many times, and these do not look like hives, more like mosquito bites. Best to be safe though.

Well, I was able to speak with my doctor's office today, and they are keeping me on the meds. They felt it was probably not a reaction to the antibiotics as it is not widespread and it goes away in spite of the fact I am still taking the Ceftin.
I am pretty happy about that as I really prefer the Ceftin over Doxy.
