Typical amount is 20 to 50 billion units comprised of a lot of strains (8 or more). Ultimate Flora, Threelac, VSL #3, and others are a good choice. Another good option in addition to this is S. Boulardi to help guard against C. Diff when on Abx.
Some here go to the extreme and take things like Progurt with 50 bazillion units. Some are reporting positive results with it. Others not. Same as always with all modalities/supplements.

Hi Cris,
Congratulations to your brother and his diagnosis.
Yes ditto to seek.
If his LLMD did not offer a professional strength for sale (e.g. IFLORA / Sedona Labs Professional Strength-16 strains) at the office, you can go to your local health food store and get a good, high culture/high strain refrigerated probiotic.
Probiotics replenish the good intestinal flora that the antibiotics kills along with bacteria.
Personally, I have used Renew Life Ultimate Flora CRITICAL CARE, which has 10 strains. Its also recommended for those on abx. It was easy for me to find that brand, but you may come across other good refrigerated brands -- just be sure to check the number of cultures/strains. The higher the better.
My LLMD recommended to take one at bedtime and the others 2-3 hours away from antibiotics.
Replenish 2-3 times a day as it is difficult to restore the good flora that abx kills off on a daily basis.

My LLMD suggested that I start off with two at bedtime. I can ultimately up the amount to 8 pills a day if necessary.
I am currently taking 6 a day...3 a few hours after my ABX in the am and then 3 more at bedtime. Seems to be working so far.

I want to emphasize how important it is to have at least 2 hrs between the antibiotic and acidophilus - before and after.
If acidophilus is taken too close to abx, it will be wiped out before it can help. For that reason, I always take mine after the abx. It gives the acidophilus longer to work before hitting it again with abx, especially all night.
