I'm wondering if "I" have problems with these drugs or if it is lyme related?

Yes. I am allergic to Bactrim. Causes me to itch.

I itch, break out in a rash and swell up like the GoodYear Blimp!

What are your symptoms, ruggie?

I just this morning took my first Bactrim. My LLMD warned me that it may be difficult for me to distinguish between my acne-type rashes and an allergic reaction to the abx.

He said I may need to "pop back into the office" for him to take a look at any new weird lesions.

It is not lyme-related. It is an individual thing whether or not a person has allergies to sulfa drugs.

I have no problem with them, for example, and used them extensively when I was being treated for lyme and coinfections.

I got real red eyes, -- beyond my normal conjunctivitis -- a sore throat, and small blood blisters in my mouth. It was recommended by a few docs to stop taking Bactrim for me.

It's too bad to because I thought it was helping some but the risk of getting something crazy like Steven-Johnson's was not worth it.

When I took them I remember feeling like I was going into a coma and couldn't breathe. However, once I found my aldosterone was low and got medicine for my adrenals, some of those terrifying symptoms ended. I haven't taken sulfa drugs since because I'm scared. However, it looks like some of them could really help.

I did take zithromax (one pill) and got an enormous red nasty itchy rash all over my back and butt. My doctor said it was probably herx. I backed down to 1/8 of a pill, and have built to 1/2 of a pill. No more rashes. SO, I guess he was right. Now I wonder if the sulfa thing was a herx as well. Thanks for your replies!

I got major tachychardia, insomnia and axiety on Bactrim. Felt like I was on speed for 2 weeks then quit.

I am allergic to sulfa--red/purple marks all over me, especially face. Don't remember if they were welts or flat.

Also allergic to sulfa drugs--rash all over and very itchy.

Same here. I got huge welts from head to toe that itched and hurt. My eyes and lips swelled up too. I looked like Mr potato head! It was very unpleasant!!!

Just want to mention that people with autoimmune problems tend to react this way to sulfa drugs. Doesn't mean that everyone who reacts to sulfa, then has an autoimmune problem, but it is worth noting.

Definite allergy reactions to Sulfa drugs for me--since I was a child.

I wouldn't assume that a bad reaction is a "herx."

I'd like to see the original research data about people with autoimmune problems tending to react negatively to sulfa drugs. How about it, Shosty?

Best,

Cass A

For me bactrim helps enormously - more than any other abx so far.....

I don t wake up any longer with this shivering and inflammation feeling.

By the way I have an very high IGE (3000)and I think the IGE comes from protozooa.

That would make sense because the other drugs which helped me were clindamycin and tinidazole which also target protozooa.

Stefan,

I am encouraged to hear you had good results with Bactrim. I took my first dose yesterday and within hours I felt different. I got a headache, woozy-feeling and just generally "off".

Not that I want to have a herx or be sick, but I do want results so with those reactions in mind and your results I am optimistic.

Thanks for posting! [Smile]

Cass, this is very well-known and mentioned fairly prominently in any book on lupus or autoimmunity. I can give you titles and page numbers, but, as I said, reaction to sulfa w/lupus, for instance, is not at all obscure, and is even mentioned in questioning by rheumatologists in a first appointment, at least the 3 we have seen over the years. So is a positive test for syphilis, which is a spirochetal illness like Lyme that is often false-positive for lupus patients, according to the books. Interesting, isn't it?

None of this may pertain at all to the original post or other posters, but just thought I would mention it.

Supposebly I'm allergic and break out in hives. I didn't know this until my mom recently told me. I guess back in high school I was put on it for something and had a horrible reaction.
