For those who used both, did you feel Ceftin and Biaxin or Biaxin and Amoxicillin was more effective? Toss the Plaquenil out of the picture please.
Personal experiences appreciated. Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
Well, I was going to mention Plaquenil since it makes the Biaxin work better ..... and can be taken with either Ceftin or Amoxy and the Biaxin.
Uh, I liked the Ceftin family, though I never took Ceftin, I took Cedax. I hated Amoxicillin though I was on it five months and did progress .... I just felt bad the whole time on it.

I did very well on Biaxin and Amoxy for over a year. I then had to add Samento when I hit a healing crisis. I've know others to do well on this combo.
I am just now doing Ceftin and Biaxin and it seems to have brought me out of my "crash" and I'm finally doing better again.
My opinion is that the Ceftin and Biaxin combo is stronger. I don't know if I could have done this two years ago when I started the Biaxin/Amoxy, but it works very well for me now.
Are you going to the Lyme Conference? It's in the Troy area on Aug 25th.
Trying to spread the word!

Six, my LLMD will not allow me to take more than 2 drugs at any one time so I need to pick and choose two. It was left up to me.
Mojo, glad to hear you're having success. Posted by ruggie100 (Member # 21415) on :
Thank you mojo for the biaxin ceftin combo.
I took one amoxy and herxed terribly!!!!!!! Biaxin much better!

Wow, my wife is all over me about how weak Amoxicillin is and telle me constantly babies are given it and I'm being stupid for thinking I may herx. Tough to say I guess. She thinks it's literally candy.

Well, when I took amoxy, I took 2500 mg three times daily .... as Lymies we are given so much more than little babies. It kicked my butt!
I much preferred the Ceftin family .... just made me feel better.

I'm wondering if I should just replace 1,000 mg of Ceftin for the 3,000 mg of Amoxicillin my LLMD said I could take with Biaxin. I have the Ceftin already. Amoxicillin, Ceftin...does it matter? Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
I'd go for the Ceftin ... but I bet you already guessed that. I think the 3000 mg is low since I was taking 7500 and weighed less than 130 pounds at the time. I had a peak level test done to verify this was the right amount for me.
I wouldn't bother with too low a dose of amoxy .... unless he's planning on increasing the dosage .... I did have to work up to what I took and every increase caused a painful herx.

Amoxi is very effective when used in high doses such as up 18,000mgs along with a cyst buster (tindamax or flagyl) 1,500mg and bixain or zithromax 1,200mg.
It definitely is NOT candy!
With any orals, the dose has to be high to get past your stomach acid and past the BBB.

Your wife doesn't know what she's talking about, no offense.
Amoxicillin is a powerful Lyme drug. I have tested CDC positive for Lyme multiple times, and I am affected by it. Most babies don't have Lyme.
Penicillin class have been historically used against syphillis, another spirochete. Bicillin, for some with Lyme, is a miracle drug....and can be even more effective than traditional IV lyme meds. Amox is a miracle drug for some with Lyme. So don't listen to your wife!
Have you tried either Amox or Ceftin? One may work better for you than the other. If Amox helped you in the past, might be worth another shot. If you have tried Amox and were only mildly impressed, than I'd try Ceftin.
There are a lot of factors....some people's bodies process meds differently, so certain ones may work better for you as an individual. I think trial and error is the best bet.
You could see which one seems to help people here more, but if you have personal experience with either one, that would tell you more.

Okay, just read that you have taken Ceftin. If you aren't herxing much on it, and it isn't helping a lot, might as well try Amox.
If neither helps much, than either you don't have many of the cell wall forms of spirochetes floating around (i.e., they are intracellular or in cyst-form), or, maybe your immune system is not up to snuff and recognizing what's Lyme. That is my non-llmd opinion. Very much an opinion, mind you....but based on experience at least.

I got NOwhere with amoxy. Did nothing for me.

Part of my H Pylori eradicaton protocol featured 2000 mgs of Amoxy per day, which would be very mild for lyme treatment. Fortunately, the protocol also includes some biaxin (and a proton pump inhibitor) so I figure that I'll break even until I can resume my regular lyme treatment...

I don't think there's no way my LLMD is going above 3,000 mg SixGoofy and I weigh much, much more than you do. The dosage would basically be a joke for me, especially without Prob####.
I spoke to another person here who took 15,000 mgs+ daily before.
I don't think my LLMD tests peak blood levels with any drugs. Could be wrong, but.....
I probably would herx anyways on it though. Why bother if it's not a killing dose?
I want this bacteria obliterated so I can live a normal life again.
Hoosiers, I took Ceftin in Nov-08. 1,000 mg with Biaxin 1,000 mg. Ironically, my ID doc (IDSA) and not an ILADS doc put me on combo therapy. I handled it OK. It was short-lived therapy.
I'd be happy to give it another try now as many months have past.
I have absolutely no idea why all LLMDs aren't running simple blood level tests for these Abx. It blows my mind. SOme test for every obscure thing in the world, but they don't think to check to see if the dosages are effective based on absorption, body weight, etc. For the risks you take on these Abx, doesn't it make sense to make sure you're taking the correct amount.
I guess there's lots in Lymeland that blows my mind at times. I guess I should call my LLMD and see if he's OK with me taking the Ceftin. I'm sure he would be. He didn't Rx it.
I've got some decent combinations coming up though. It'll be interesting to see how I do.

Although why monkey around with abx level testing when you can move right to IV My LLMD gave me the spiel that maybe I'm not absorbing enough abx...
