I've read a lot about people being hypothyroid with Lymes, but not anything about hyperthyroid. I was diagnosed with Graves about 2 1/2 yrs ago. I have been treated for the hyper thyroid since. Just wanted to know if it's possible that this is also Lymes and another disease I was wrongfully diagnosed with.
Any thoughts?

I can't tell you if you were misdiagnosed but thyroid issues in general are associated with lyme whether it be hypo or hyper. Also Hashimotos.

I have wondered about this forever. My TSH is always high, usually around .89 and the reference range begins at .45.
I am so close to being out of the range, but my LLMD isn't concerned. Still, I can't help but wonder what it means and wonder if it isn't Lyme-related.

My TSH has always been within normal limits -- according to Labs--
but I have demonstrated clinical symptoms of Hypo- for quite some time.
Not until I met my LLMD was I tested for Hashimoto's and there it was.
I have been mostly Hypo, but with Hashimoto's one can go "hyper". About 3-4 years ago I was unable to keep weight on. I attributed it to eating lower carb than usual at the time.
I dropped 10 pounds rapidly but my body just kept on going. In retrospect, I can see that my thyroid was Hyper for a time.
Note: My TSH was not considered "high" nor has it ever been considered "low". Yet, I have thyroid disease.
Anyway, 2 different LLMDs have told me that lyme tends to try to knock out the thyroid to make their environment (us) more hospitable to them.
Once the lyme is eradicated, things should go back to normal. In the meantime, I am taking Armour thyroid.

My T4 borders on high, which would indicate hyperthyroidism. It is just within normal range, so no one will treat me for it. I have lost down to 105 lbs and no matter how much I eat, I don't gain weight. I also have anxiety and insomnia.
I sure hope this goes away with lyme treatment. I have been treating for 15 months.

I have read that with hashimotos, one can have a thyroid storm that will resemble hyperthyroidism, which is followed by hypothyroidism as the gland fails. So, it has puzzled me how you could distinguish between hyper and hypo is such a situation. Doubtful that very many docs are checking for anti-thyroid antibodies.
Another puzzle: since it has been published that one reason for thyroid autoantibodies is genetic similarities between thyroid tissue and borrelia (molecular mimicry) will someone with lyme and hashimotos reverse both conditions with successful lyme treatment?

Well, thyroid issues are fairly common with and without lyme. Just run the complete tests..not just TSH...but free and total t3 and T4 as well as RT3...
Most of these tests can be purchased online without your MD's requisition...the labs will supply it...

mmbl it is possible that you have a lot more than you have found so far. Virus' and bacteria's.
If you have been treating the Graves for that long that in itself is reason to believe it could be
something. Most bodies cannot tolerate it and opt for surgery. What are your antibody levels? Are
you on beta blockers?
I would hope my LLMD would figure all this out and take appropriate treatment. There are just
too many variables to handle alone.

lou...I have never heard about having a thyroid storm with Hashi's but that is interesting.
I always thought that only people that were hyper needed to worry about that...guess I was wrong!
