My wife has been on IV rocephin for about a week now. Yesterday her dose was increased from 1000mg to 2000mg. Tonight she is having some pretty bad stomach/ab pains.
We will call the Dr. in the morning. However, I have some questions. Has anyone else experienced this before? Google searches show that ab pain is a poss. side effect of rocephin. If we can't do rocephin, what are others taking in it's place?
Thanks.

You can take Zithromax. It could be her gallbladder; is she on Actigall? I developed gallstones within a week or two.

watch gallbladder !!!
if she is having: nausea, vomiting, tingling in right shoulder area, pain under right upper rib region, radiating pain,etc....
rocephin caused gallbladder prob for me too. started as a "tingle" under shoulder area in back with infusions.....i dismissed it thinking may have been from port surj...bad mistake on my part!!!
by time had the actuall "attacks"- she will feel like gonna die!! -- anyway surj. showed me path report and mine was already bleeding on the inside. would have ended up an emergency and rupture if not taken out when did. and this was only 2 wk after the "oh my gosh, worse than labor- pain" hit me.
ask for ultrasound of GB!!! lyme likes to get in spots like GB to begin with. so, on IV can make worse and rocephin is hard on GB too....
also- she needs to be on great pro-biotics. maybe an issue of GI balance?

She has had gallbladder problems in the past, so it s possible they are back with the rocephin.
We've tried zithro already and the herxs were too much. She's been on many different abx over the past two years and now that we are finally on rocephin she is having trouble with it after only 1 week.
I will mention GB to her today. I believe she is planning to call the hospital to get some guidance on the pain.
Thanks.

Call the Dr. for an Actigall Rx!!!
Rocephin is known to cause biliary sludging. Make sure the Dr KNOWS she's had GB problems in the past.

With a hx of GB problems, I am surprised your wife was put on Rocephin at all.
I also would insist on an ultrasound; I went through GB problems on Rocephin a few years ago, and made the mistake of trying to ride out several gallbladder attacks By the time I ended up in the ER the last time (had signed myself out ANA before), I had beginnings of pancreatitis and was in imminent danger of GB rupture.
IV Claforan is usually considered a good alternative for those with GB issues. It just needs to be infused a little more frequently, and you don't have the risks of biliary sludging like with Rocephin.

we called the dr today and they immediately called in an rx for actigall to our pharmacy. I guess we'll see how that goes now.
