I ran out of Nystatin for a week and said oh well. I take Olive Leaf Extract daily (up to 1,500 mg now and will push to 2,000 mg - 18% concentration). I felt decent most of last week. Not right - not able to drive - weak to a degree, but more human.
I also take 1 200 mg Diflucan weekly per my LLMD.
I started back on Nystain yesterday and feel worse today. Maybe this drug doesn't agree with me? Maybe I stupidly have taken it for a year just because a LLMD said you should and I react poorly to it. Hmmmmmm.
I've had many allergists, PCPs, etc. laugh at me for taking it. They didn't get it.
If I diligently take OLE, garlic, and 1 diflucan a week, could i dump the Nystatin daily? Is it really so important? I'm so sick of swallowing pills.

Hmm it worked for my but I just quit recently because I could get symptoms from just the small amount of sugar in it.

I would dump the Nystatin. Diflucan passes thru the intestinal wall, Nystatin does not. I think you are better off with the Diflucan and OLE.

Well its worth a try! Is it for yeast? If so sounds like your more than covered without it.

Yes.

Sounds good. I never did get up to 16 pills a day like my LLMD wanted. I have a feeling I'd get pretty sick. lol.

Hey seek, be sure to take a lot of acidophilus a few hours after you take the Diflucan, as you'll need to replenish your gut.

I used to herx from taking nystatin from the die off, but it lasted a week or so and then felt much better. Nystatin kills the yeast in the gut and doesn't effect the liver like the diflucan does. Diflucan gets the yeast in the rest of the body after it leaves the gut.
Diflucan and OLE are both excellent for yeast so it does sound like you are covered. I also rotate in grapefruit seen extract and Oil of Oregano as well. They work great too.

HUH?? Diflucan kills yeast not gut flora.
Seek.. If you do that, be SURE not to drop the OLE. Nystatin worked wonders for me... and it doesn't contain any sugar if you're taking the pills or powder. The liquid contains sugar.

Lymetoo - Interesting. My LLMD told me years ago that it kills not only yeast, but some of the other beneficial flora. Guess that's not so.
Sorry seek. Can't hurt to take the acidophilus anyway.

Yes it is true. Nystatin will kill beneficial flora in the GI tract that is one of the many reasons why you need to supplement with probiotics at least two
to three hours after ABX, anti-fungals, such as NyStatin, Diflucan, OLE, oil of oregano, grapefuit extract or any agent that is designed to kill off fungus, yeast and bacteria.

I take high dose probiotics (VSL-3) and Sach Boulari too. I'm going to pump up the dosing of OLE. I've always felt this supplement has helped me a bit. It caused a bigger herx feeling months ago than now. I knew it was doing something.
I will never stop probiotics Lymetoo. I know that.
I do wonder if I would've noticed more had I took 8-16 pills a day. Tough to say. Maybe I will revisit sometime.

I stopped it by accident. I ran out months ago and forgot to ask for a refill.
I'm off ABX (rifing now) and taking some Diflucan but I do want to try OLE or GFSE
I'm also a "lifer" with the probiotics!

seekhelp,
16 pills a day of Nystatin is what you were supposed to get up to???? That's a lot.
Nystatin is to kill or prevent yeast in the GI tract only. It does not get absorbed into other areas of the body.
I'm not sure you would need it with Diflucan, except that there are some "yeasties" that are resistant to Diflucan, so Nystatin would cover those in your GI. And the GI is important, by the way.
Honestly, the reaction you got after restarting it could have been yeast die off.
Nystatin is pretty mild and doesn't go systemic (all over the body) from what I understand. So it seems like it would not make a person feel crummy, unless it was from a die-off.

That's what I think too. Hoosiers, I used to take 16 pills a day. I think you only do that for awhile to make sure you've knocked out the yeast. Then you go to maintenance of 4 pills a day.
abxnomore.. I never heard of Nystatin killing beneficial flora.. but I will take my probiotics away from it just in case.
I still take Nystatin periodically even though I'm not on abx. I still have yeast issues from time to time.

ABX.. could you provide us with a link to that information? I would really appreciate it.

Lymetoo,
Maybe abxnomore means the saccharomyces bouldarii...I think that is still considered a "probiotic," even though it's a yeast.
So that would go back to what I was asking about with the Nystatin tonight in my Clindamycin post.
Just a thought. I'd like to know too if that is what he/she meant by "beneficial flora."

I had a LLMD take me off of Nystatin, replacing it with 1 Diflucan a week. It was shortly after I stopped the Nystatin that I developed severe abdominal bloating.
I thought it was silly to stop taking it as I was and still am taking antibiotics. I really think stopping it sent me in to a massive yeast overload in the gut which I'm still trying to overcome.
Another LLMD told me Nystatin is very safe and should be taken if on antibiotics.

Maybe, because I have NEVER heard that Nystatin kills anything beneficial.
I do understand what you're saying though, massman.
Posted by Hoosiers51 (Member # 15759) on :
Massman,
Saccharomyces are beneficial YEAST in the gut. So I am worried the Nystatin would kill them.
I saw my doctor a couple months ago, and I'm happy to report his head was not up his rear. When you are taking powerful antibiotics, sometimes Nystatin is needed to ensure the yeast do not get the upper hand.
I would appreciate you not use derrogatory terminology, and keep your observations polite.
