I eat really well.......but I have to admit...the desire to cheat hits me once in a while! I take plenty of probiotics and watch my diet. Never touch processed foods, refined foods, sugar etc......

But today I was in the mood for fast food french fries so I had to stop and get some. I think I basically inhaled them. I couldn't resist. That is so not like me.

I eat candy about 5 days a week, so far nor problems (2.5 years in treatment).

Aside from teh high sugar, I eat helathy diet of mostly fish, chicken, rice and vegetables.

Take large quantities of good probiotics too.

So, don't feel bad, it sounds like you are very good at keeping to a good diet

Thanks Amanda...I have always been a health nut...so even when I was well.....fries were rare.

I can't cheat, whether I want to or not.

Food sensitivities to most everything make life exponentially worse with the smallest slip. So much so that cheating is unthinkable.

Uh...good question, I could have posted this myself. True confessions?? lol Yup, ate some Kit-Kat bars this week (early Halloween treat) and so far OK..

But it's good to bring this up, it reminds us all that we're only human, but also that by seeing our own/other's posts we are reminded of the need to continue to maintain a pristine diet.

I could cheat and probably do.... but with what, I'm not sure?

I am vegetarian, so I don't eat any meat except fish, so I stay away from most fast food (not all, but MOST). And I stay away from all dairy. I'm also gluten intolerant, so I stay away from gluten and wheat. I also stay away from chocolate or any form of caffeine due to it possibly causing palpitations (which I do almost everything in my power to AVOID because I am scared of them.....). I stay away from candy and most sweets as well because I'm not fond of sugar (I know, I am weird!). I would much rather take spicy/salty food over anything sugary any day!

When on meds, I only allowed myself a once per week cheat.

Now, I generally eat very healthy and don't have a sweet tooth (D, you're not weird!), but I eat what I want when I want it, so if it's a bad food, I eat it. Thing is, I prefer to eat healthy so it's not often.

I sure do. Life is miserable enough already without being able to sometimes have something I want and like. I love Starbucks frappucinos, and wine. So I have them sometimes.
I eat healthy, cut out most processed foods and anything fried except in olive oil.

Yes, I eat rice - it's a big staple for me now that I am gluten intolerant and stay away from gluten. And yes, I eat potatoes.

I cheat! It keeps me sane. Mostly I am gooooooodddddddd....but occassionally a nice glass of wine. Once in a blue moon pumpkin pie.

otherwise, my diet is organic and process food free. I do eat potatoes. No fried food. All homemade salad dressings, kefier....everything. I belong to community sponsored farming and own a share in an organic farm. All chicken, beef, turkey is grass fed and local.

My fish is caught from the lake that I live on....oh! I do love and give in to my occ. french fry crave........

I eat potatoes. I didn't restrict them at all. I am sure to eat them with the skin on to get all the nutritional benefits.

I also eat brown rice. Oatmeal with a little maple syrup. Organic pancakes.

I consider cheating to be the stuff made from white flour, sugar, etc.

I am gluten and wheat free but can have brown rice products if they are gluten and wheat free. Food shopping takes a lot longer now.

I found these awesome brown rice tortillas which doc said is okay as long as I am having protein with them.

And no pasta except if its brown rice pasta.

No dairy either, but I have to have a smidgen of milk in my half a cup of coffee in the morning or a slice of Rice cheese on my turkey burger. Throw on lettuce, tomato and ketchup (cant give up my ketchup) and it taste yummy.

I've also had a few candies this week...damn halloween.

I can relate since I am semi-vegetarian. Some of the doctors I have worked with recently are also vegetarian so that is always a plus.

I will have a piece of chicken once in a while, or the occassional egg, etc so I am not strict....

But when I cheat, and it is rare.....it will be something like a few slices of pizza, a bag of fries, a slice of cheese cake. Again, these are very rare!

tickbattler, whole potatos I believe are fine.....as nature intended. Remember potatos and other broken down complex carbs will do a lot to feed the good guys as well, they provide pre-biotics. Plus, there are lots of Candida diets that allow red skin potatos! I eat tons, tons of red skin potatos. I have not had candida problems at all.

I consider cheating to be the stuff made from white flour, sugar, processed foods that are not intact as nature intended, etc.

I eat potatoes all the time. It's not as bad as something like cotton candy or ice cream to have some fries. Just avoid blatant sugar and repeated junk food habits. Have some whole grains, healthy sweets like pineapple (if you not on antibiotics) sweet potatoes, etc.

I meant that if you are not on antibiotics its good! If you are on them, its alot of sugar that feeds yeast!Once you are off antibiotics for good the fruit can come back in moderation! [Smile] Yay!

I find it hard to eat what I am suppose to and keep the abx from eating me instead.

I am trying to stick to green stuff, but I don't really avoid starches and potatoes. They seem to be the only thing that keeps me from being sick as a dog.

I've found leaving coffee hasn't been as difficult as I thought it would be. I do miss my beer tho...

For the most part, I'm good. But I do cheat occasionally.

Every now and then I eat sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and ricecakes.

Each day I allow myself one slice of whole wheat toast with a little butter in the a.m. when taking my antibiotics.

Yesterday I was BAD. There's a wonderful health food store near me and they bake their own breads and rolls. I had three pieces of San Francisco sourdough bread with butter...warm from the oven. Mmmm.

Now for the next few days I'll be very strict.

This is how it seems to go for me.

Sometimes I eat something that I shouldn't. Every couple of months I eat French Fries and when I am stressed or my stomach is upset I eat a popsicle.

Otherwise I eat very well. Being intolerant to gluten, soy, and milk makes it fairly easy to stay on track. Plus, I don't like meat.

I would love a nice glass of white wine, though. Just as soon as I get off of Rifampin I am having one. [Smile]

I cheat all the time. My diet isn't what is causing my symptoms. Other people have to be extremely careful though.

Disturbed and others who are gluten intolerant:

Quite often the RICE served in restaurants is NOT gluten free. Found this out by chance!

Yeah, I cheat. I was super strict for the first month and a half, but after that it got harder.

I try to do it only once a month, and I try to eat things which I think are "less bad" [Big Grin]

So I try to avoid cookies, and refined carbs, and stick to things like dark chocolate, and ice cream with reduced sugar, or even just fruit I don't usually get to eat.

Of course, it's not as easy at it sounds....so I've broken in and had a cookie or two... [Big Grin]

Yes, TuTu is so right. Gluten is often added to rice, especially Spanish Rice in Mexican restaurants. It's in a flavor packet. Watch out for all things burrito, too. Gluten is added to so many foods.

You can call ahead and ask them to tell you. It's better than having to call the next day, gasping on the phone.

As for "cheating on a diet" I tossed both those words out LONG ago. I don' think of it as a diet (they never work) and cheating implies a terrible sin or something to be guilty about - and cheating usually winds up hurting the cheater anyway. With food, it's a loaded word.

If I cheat and eat gluten, I'm not cheating but, rather, putting a tremendous strain on my body, one that could have effects for months to come (some literature suggests it can take 6 months to clear gluten reactions from the brain).

Rather than think of it as a diet, I simply don't eat many particular foods as a rule because I feel better that way.

For me, it is easier to think that way and not feel deprived. Actually, I feel blessed to able to NOT eat some of the stuff that's out there. I'm still mad that the food "industry" kept us in the dark for so long.

The heart can know right away when a bad oil has been consumed (and it's more about the chemical process than the cholesterol). Trans fats & overheated oils - never, ever good for anyone. But, if one winds up with a french fry in their mouth, it should be followed as soon as possible with a dose of fish oil or walnuts. The good fat can mitigate - to a degree- that damage from a bad fat. Once in a while.

I have a design to eat from a well-thought out list of other foods - that both taste good and fulfill a requirement of nutrient or purpose.

However, given either opportunity or emergency, if some things from the list of "foods I just don't eat" wind up in my mouth, well, then it was just a day out of the ordinary and I go back to my normal. Following a bad choice immediately with a good choice can help the body not be so tossed off the tracks.

However, I've learned the hard way that gluten is something that can never be negotiated. For me, never. And that is fine because of all the problems it causes. The divorce worked. I'm better without it. Like that song from the sixties ("Got along without you before I met you, Gonna get along without you now. ")

Often, the things that may be tempting but are not healthy can be made in ways that will work for us - and be better for others around us, too.


When going out or to friends, it helps to think in advance of the temptations likely to be there - figure out if that will work for my body or not --- and have the choice to take my own version which, most often, I prefer anyway.

Remember, food is to be enjoyed, savored. When we expand our choices and get creative with herbs, seasonings and flavor -- and include LOTS of color and variety there is no desire to cheat -- even nutritious food can taste like guilty pleasure.

Oh this is so good too know! I thought I was the only one. I did try to take out sugar and carbs and I felt awful. I think I just needs carbs. There are so many different diet recommendations out there. I have had the most success on the adrenal recovery diet in Wilson's book. So I eat protein at every meal and also in between. Cut out juice. Tried to cut out too many simple carbs (but I still eat my share) and eat complex carbs instead. I have also almost completely cut out coffee as it was dehydrating me, even decaf, and making me feel worse. I don't eat candy but I do have a sweet tooth and have dessert probably once a week. Of course I do have yeast issues, but I have been very strict for stretches of time and didn't see improvement there so stopped.

This is a very good topic. We are all human and to ere is human... so to say.
I think to have a little treat is good now and then. It signals pink in the brain and says be happy. Then we can pull ourselves up by the boot straps and continue on in this journey to be well. It has not been easy for any of us. I will share what I have given up.
Coffee, milk, butter, bread with wheat and gluten foods, SUGAR,
And I have allergies to:
Bananas 56H
Wheat, 7.6
Casein (as in milk & milk products)10.0
eggwhites 5.8
Cacao Bean (chocolate) 5
beef 4.5

(night shade eggplant)
white potato 3.2

orange 2.4
and apple. 3.6
I don't know the full meaning of this.... but that dang banana just got ditched

I have eliminated everything on your list except corn and eggs. I know corn is OK, don't want to know about eggs. If I'm allergic to eggs, I'm in BIG trouble.

I did cold turkey on coffee. Bam.. right out the window.
Milk was a little hard. I like a little of milk around my oatmeal. I may look into goatmilk. I miss butter a little too. Trying Smart balance with olive oil. It doesn't measure up.

Now bread has always been my weakness. You know go into the market and you can smell that fresh bread just cooking. Yum. I am using rice bread at this time. Not the same but it will do. So instead of sugar I am using stevia.

I did not/do not like giving up my dark 90% chocolate. Just one square?? [Mad]

I was told grass fed free range beef may be OK for me. And tomatos? I know that I am sensitive to eggplant..(Same family). But if you grow them in the back yard or get them at the farmers market aren't they safer?

I am still sorting through my diet. Getting rid of one thing and adding in something new. My weight loss has leveled off. I have loss 12 lbs just by changing diet in 2 months. Good by pounds, I won't miss you. [Wink]

My body is craving protein lately. So far so good on that but I feel weak.

Correction,.. I do eat apples.

Bread.. go to the health food store and get a multi-grain GF bread.

Nightshades include tomatoes, no matter how they're grown.

No, I can't cheat on my diet - I get violently ill if I do...

However, there are some foods I can eat during certain times and not others (chocolate is one - gives me headaches if I eat it during my cycle, but not other times of the month), or foods I can only eat occasionally or else I get sick from them (such as peanuts, pumpkin seeds; can't do other nuts/seeds).


Maryinvt2,

GF = Gluten Free...so the GF bread should be free of gluten, including wheat, rye, and barley.

Glad to read there are other like me. I try to be good but sometimes you just have to give in. I do have a half cup of coffee every morning... And wine sometimes when I'm not of flagyl. I am trying to be almost gluten free,

I just discovererd china black rice bread. When I want a donut, I have a slice of this tosted with a drop of butter, raw honey and cinnamon. I think I might like it better than donuts... I certainly don't feel as bad.

I think I solved the problem(at least for myself. I take my wormwood combo, cloves and digestive enzymes when I cheat.

My logic is that if any bad stuff is in there and is even considering eating my food...they will get a mouthful of poison.....hehehehe [Big Grin]

Ellen, it does not really taste like a donut! ( the same way kale chips dont taste like potato chips) But with the honey and cinnamon, it does sort of take the craving away...

I get it at whole foods... I like the red Bhutanese rice bread too... But the black china rice is really chewy. Here's the brand.
