over two years ago I had a toxic reaction to abx (levaquin) and subsequently couldn't take any abx without getting CNS side effects. Now trying Biaxin again and getting insomnia at a pretty low dose. Should I keep taking and hope to get over the insomnia, could I pulse it maybe by taking it every other day (or something like that) to see if I could ease my way back up? As it stands I can't take the insomnia -- I need some sleep! What abx are less likely to cause insomnia /anxiety but that also might treat bartonella?
Thanks for your thoughts!

I would continue the Biaxin daily and get some Ambien!!!! Posted by TF (Member # 14183) on :
Insomnia is a side effect of biaxin. I only lasted 4 days on it. The insomnia got worse each day. It also gave me anxiety which got worse each day and anorexia. By day 4, I could not eat even one spoonful of food in a day. It was ridiculous.
I called the doc and told him and he laughed and said to stop the biaxin. Said these were Biaxin side effects.
Here is what rxlist.com says about these types of biaxin side effects:
Transient CNS events including anxiety, behavioral changes, confusional states, convulsions, depersonalization, disorientation, hallucinations, insomnia, depression, manic behavior, nightmares, psychosis, tinnitus, tremor, and vertigo have been reported during post-marketing surveillance. Events usually resolve with discontinuation of the drug.
So, if all it is giving you is insomia, that's not bad. Maybe you could take something to overcome the insomnia as suggested above.
I don't know of any other meds to suggest. But, I would expect your doc knows some.

I take BIAXIN, 500mg. & AMOX, 500mg. daily which probably aren't enough to shake the ketes but have stomach issues and wanted to start gradual.
For sleep I take 8mg. Rozerem, 1mg. Klonopin, and 300mg. Neurontin. I was taking 2mg. Lunesta but dropped it when the other 3 meds seemed to help the insomnia.
The Rozerem helps me fall asleep fairly quickly. It is to be taken no more than 30 mins. before bedtime.
Good luck on finding something that works.

I didn't know about all those side effects when I was taking Biaxin! I took it for 18 months!
