Can anyone share their experience with bactrim for lyme/babesia? I have read some horrible side effect stories. I had to stop doxy 6 days ago due to side effect of horrible rash/dryness/blisters on my face after 3 months use. The doc wants me to start bactrim now, but I am going away on vacation in a few days and hate to start a new drug just before I go, but don't know if it is ok to not taking anything for another week. Going to call the doc about this, but in the meantime, has anyone had a better than awful experience with bactrim?

Bactrim is my standby. It always works better than anything else. Seems to work on whatever strain of Lyme and babesia that I have. Couldn't tolerate Mepron, so did 5 months of Malarone with Bactrim. Still use Bactrim for a flare.

dalewine - I don't know about Bactrim for TBD, but I'm taking it right now as tx for post ruptured appendix. It's a sulpha drug and leaves a constant taste in my mouth, not to mention what else.... Doc is using it with Rifampin, which counteracts my anti-hypertensive but won't change the rx. Have no idea if it will do the trick or not. Think I'll see a different doc from this time going forward.

Best to everyone in their quest to get well!

I've been on bactrim about 2 mos. I was having joint pain and feeling real crappy before starting it and about 3 days on bactrim joint pain was about 70% improved. Didn't feel so terrible 24/7. I still have burning sensations and my neck bothers me alot but I think I'm slowly improving. I crash every afternoon around 3pm and can't fuigure that one out.

I don't knowq how symptomatic or bad you feel but starting a new drug just before vacation, I wouldn't do. A week off would probably be good for your body. Detox.

I took Bactrim DS (double strength) for about 1 year and was totally fine.

It got rid of my babesiosis. That was 4 1/2 years ago, and I am still symptom-free.

I say I was fine on the Bactrim, but the babs really came to the fore. I got a babs flare every 7 days like clockwork as soon as I started the Bactrim. Flare lasted 2 days and I WAS MISERABLE.

When I told the doc this, he added artimesinin to be pulsed on the days I had the flare. That worked like a miracle. Reduced the flare to nearly nothing the first week. Then, less and less each week.

So, I was happy on Bactrim.

I had a side effect from a rifampin/bactrim combo that I can't get rid of. When I've been sitting down then when I get up, my ankles are stiff and painful.
