Hi Everyone:

There are so many new names on here that I feel I should re-introduce myself. I have known I have LD for 10 years but have been infected for over 25. I have Chronic Neuro Lyme and just recently found a new LLMD in Maryland that also found I have co-infections Babesia and Bartonella. With the treatment for the Bartonella I have now been seizure free for 9 months...yeh!!!!

I just started the mepron treatment for the babs and my blood levels were low so they increased my dose to 1 1/2 tsp twice a day and to increase my fat intake. Question: Why the fat intake and what the heck am I supposed to eat. The LLMD said Peanut buttered toast was good so that has been my breakfast for the past month but what else should I be eating? Any and all comments regarding taking Mepron would be helpful. I really haven't had any herxing and the LLMD said it could take up to 4 - 5 months until it is noticeable. At this point I am happy to say I am having more good days than bad for once and hope that continues.

Take the Mepron with meals. If it is a low fat meal, add in some almonds, almond butter, walnuts, etc. Eggs, cottage cheese, plain yogurt, coconut oil are some other options that come to mind for breakfast.

If you eat a hearty meal that already has fat in it, say cooked with olive oil, then you don't have to worry about adding anything.

I have yet to find the source for the idea of taking Mepron with fat. The Mepron insert sites a study that says it's better absorbed with a breakfast of 610kcal, and 23g of fat, over fasting.

To me that doesn't sound like the fat is anymore important than a 610kcal meal. But what is important is not to take it without food.

But, everyone says fat is important. I guess it can't hurt.

I have read recommendations of peanut butter, ice cream, cheese, full fat yogurt, etc. Everything that you're not supposed to eat if you have high cholesterol!

I assume, and someone please clarify if they know better, that hamburgers, and hot dogs, and steak, etc will work too.

The 1 tsp twice a day dose of Mepron comes from the treatment of malaria. It is not proven that it is the proper dose for babs.

I was on the standard dose for 6 months, and the babs came back. Now I'm on 2 tsp twice a day.

You all are making me so hungry. I just started Mepron yesterday, causing massive fevers of 102, herxing, stiffness, the works.

I think its been great so far, because I can feel it working. I just hope insurance continues to pay for the next 3 months or so.

The peanut butter sounds like a tasty easy breakfast, too bad I've been developing peanut allergies since getting LD.

Reading about Mepron on these forms made me think it was going to taste absolutely vomit-inducingly gross. I'm just glad it doesn't taste as bad as I imagined.

I would also think Twinkies and Ring Dings, and grilled cheese sandwiches, and onion rings, and chocolate milkshakes, fettucini alfredo, and EGG NOG, and chocolate mousse....

would all be necessary to provide the proper amount of fat content for proper absorption of Mepron. [lick]

Thanks everyone for your input... I had to laugh at James b/c last night with that dose I had a tasty kake with it... now I assume that had fat in it..LOL...
So far I am doing ok.. just don't feel like myself and am yelling at the kids and husb more, which makes me feel worse.

Again thank you for all your responses!!!!

I cup vanilla (all fat)ice cream with 1 1/2 teaspoons of Mepron...top with hot fudge and full fat whipped cream = adequate

You can also use healthy things like avocado, olive oil, fish oils to get the fat intake.
