My husband is about to change jobs, and health insurance. My old insurance does have on file about my Lyme disease.
Do I tell the new insurance about Lyme when they give me a physical or not???

According to the IDSA, if you had 4 weeks of treatment you can't possibly have Lyme, just "the aches and pains of daily living." Maybe you could tell the insurance company you HAD Lyme, as that's the party line. Any other symptoms you present with in the future couldn't possibly be Lyme, unless you get bit again.

I asked my insurance company about this one time. They said that in order for lyme to not be considered a pre-existing condition, you have to have been free of lyme symptoms with no lyme treatment for 18 months.

A little contradictory, isn't it?

It did not exist before it existed, therefore it is not pre-existing. The term makes no sense...and the people who use it have no brain, therefore I would indeed say nothing.

My husband said his understadning of the pre-existing condition clause is that if you are not without insurance (no lapses in coverage), they can't hit you a pre-existing condition clause.

I don't really understand the whole thing.

It may depend on the insurance company; you'd have to ask them specifically.

Amazingly, Lyme is not disqualification for underwriting. Also, if you previously had coverage while you had lyme, it shouldn't be considered a pre-existing condition. However, insurance companies are some of the truly evil businesses in this country, so anything can change.

Also, do NOT say that you have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia. They may seem like "lighter" things to go on for us compared to Lyme, but because Lyme is still ruled by the IDSA's definition, it isn't disqualifying. CFS/FM will make you completely uninsurable by every major underwriting company. Lyme is seen as something people get over quick, but CFS/FM means you're going to be on a lifetime of doctor visits and drugs, and they don't want to pay for that.

I am going through the same thing right now.

This company asks if you have had lyme and been treated for it in the past two years, what meds and if symptoms are resolved.

They also ask if you have been treated for fibromyalgia or fibromyalgia-like symptoms in the past two years.

It is so hard to know what to say.

The worst past is that they haven't paid for any of this in the past and probably aren't going to in the future anyway.

So, why do they care?

That's why my PCP will never know about my LLMD. I'm keeping the two files/charts completely separate.
