Does anyone else have air hunger pretty much all the time? These past two weeks (bart treatment) my air hunger has been pretty constant. It seems like I just can never catch my breath.
I'm not sure if this is a herx? Should I go to a pulmonologist?
I recently had a chest x-ray (but not a ct scan) and my oxygen is good too.
This is definitely my worst symptom.

For a while there I had it nonstop as well.
It started slacking off after a few months of Doxy and Rifampin, but then it picked up again when LLMD switched me from Doxy to Amoxyl.
I'm back on Doxy now, and while I still have episodes, it's not as bad.
I don't know if a pulmonologist would do any good, unless they were lyme literate.
You know how it is, they'd probably find nothing wrong and assume it's anxiety.

Same as above, rifampin and doxy supress this for me. I say skip the chest scans, had all that stuff (CT too) and wish I could go back in time to spare myself the radiation...totally useless tests, it's the disease doing this to you.

Could bart cause air hunger too, or is that basically just a babesia thing?
I get weird breathing problems (shortness of breath) a lot, but only tested positive for bart.
Or perhaps a herx could increase histamine levels, leading to asthma (if a person is prone to asthma)?

I have Bart and Babesia and have recently had alot of air hunger issues. I'm on Biaxin, Bactrim and Mepron. Hoping it edges off soon. I feel like I am short of breath, just can't get a deep enough breath in alot.
I actually went to the ER during a particularly bad episode and my stats were fine. They prescribed and inhaler anyway thinking it might be asthma but honestly I haven't experienced any relief with the inhaler and have stopped using it. I think it is the disease doing yet another weird thing to our bodies!

- txgirl09,
You talk to your LLMD first. Your LLMD needs to know what you are experiencing and may have some ideas. You can ask your LLMD if you need to see a lung specialist and, if so, who might be a LL specialist that he would recommend.
You would also need to clear any additional medicines with your LLMD.
Lung trouble is a very common part of all tick-borne infections. While not everything is always lyme, your LLMD needs to be the first in line regarding communication.
Any other doctors you see need to also be at least somewhat educated about lyme and other TBD (tick-borne disease). You can't always get that in an emergency, but it is best for your LLMD to refer you to whatever specialists you need to see down the road so that you go to the best and the brightest in that field.
Lyme/TBD affect so much and lyme patients' body have some very unique differences. Most doctors are not at all aware of the considerations.
You might ask your LLMD if he knows of a good naturopathic doctor or acupuncturist for complementary modalities.
As well, some body movement might be of help if your LLMD knows of a good DC or DO for cranial-sacral treatment, as that can really helps breathing, too.
I have spoke with my LLMD about my air hunger, and he's a bit puzzled. I don't have any other babs symptoms, and he thinks this is bart.
I'll research this some more and I sure hope it gets better.
Thanks for all the information.

I had this problem when I started ceftin, and it subsided in a few weeks. Then started Flagyl, and the air hunger started again and was very servere. I think it's a herx. I'm taking a break from abx right now, and my breathing has returned to normal.
