My husband is getting a Picc Line this week and we are going to be going through a Home Health Care for meds, supplies and weekly cleaning of the line.
It is going to run about $34 a day with insurance. Does this sound about right? Are there cheaper ways to go about this and still be safe?
Thanks, Melissa

Well no one can say since everyone has different insurance plans and each plan pays different amounts.

You might want to check if you have a home delivery system for medication. We did and it was very reasonable to go through a company they chose, curascripts. It cost us I think 30.00 a month for supplies and medicine total and they delivered it all to our door. Then the home health was billed through our insurance.

Our insurance covered my sons' PICC lines 100%.

Our insurance actually covered everything.
They mailed a package o' meds and supplies to me, I think it was every week. Maybe every two weeks?
I had to get blood drawn once a week, and the dressing on it changed. So a home nurse came to my house every Friday, took blood, and changed the dressing.

Before you start receiving care from the home health company make sure that you or your doctor get a written confirmation that the home IV therapy will be covered. This way your insurance company cannot change their minds and stick you with a bill.
Also, clarify how much your copays will be. This is good to know. My copays were more expensive than it would have been to pay out of pocket for the supplies and medication at the pharmacy.
You can also save money by asking the home health nurse to teach you how to care for your husbands PICC line. Have the nurse come once a week to change the dressing, ask her to teach you and you observe until you feel comfortable enough to take over his care.
Good luck!
