So I was reading a thread about band 41. I have read many times that 41 is not specific to lyme and that it is just a flagella but not necessarily to the lyme spirochete.
But then I have also read that there is only one (or maybe two) other possible causes of the band 41 to be positive, and they were pretty obvious things...just can't remember what they were.
So, what's the real story?

It depends on the source.
Search here on band 41.
There have been lots of postings on it.

I agree with Geneal. The source I hope they were meaning Lab that conducted the test.
Many do not have the capabilities to find any
bands. So if it was not a specific lab such as
Igenex, you may say that either the test was bad,
the patient did not have enough antibodies to
show positive, etc. etc. If you showed 41-in my
opinion, and you suspect something is wrong with
you, it should be pursued by a Lyme specific
doctor.

Correct me if I'm wrong.. but basically it means Lyme, syphilis, or gum disease.
So if you don't think you have the latter two... guess what!? Posted by bonafidejason (Member # 24472) on :
My girlfriend and I only had 41 positive on two Lyme tests before we went to IgeneX. I was exploring the flagella thing as well. I thought maybe parasites. But now we know that we have Lyme big time. God Bless You and try to see a LLMD soon!

My dad originally only had a 41. A few months before he died from what was said to be Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy and Alzheimers I was able to get bloodwork done.... there were more positive bands. Guess his 'spider-bite' wasn't from a spider after all.

Thanks everyone! I do see an LLMD and I am being treated for Babs, lyme, ehrlichia and Bart.
I was looking at my childrens' results (from Igenex) and although they were not all igenex positive, they all had positive and "IND" bands (very close to positive, and with their symptoms, my LLMD agrees to treat them). They all have positive 41 bands (although it seems everyone does).
I can never remember what it is about the 42 band. Thanks for your help.

My only band in the beginning, and I was VERY sick, was band 41.

We don't know everything that causes band 41. Your best bet is to go by response to antibiotics and/or clinicial diagnosis.
40% of people in the general population show band 41, according to one study.
See the graph on page 78 of this slideshow (given by Dr. H of Igenex):
