I started Flagyl today for the first time ever at a very small dose today to just see how I'd do.
Flagyl is absorbed fast and fully and I noticed a symptoms increase (mild herx) within a couple hours, followed by itching head to toe.
I don't have any other allergic-like symptoms, no redness, hives and no breathing problems - JUST itchy, itchy, itchy.
I put a call into my LLMd and am waiting to hear back. But was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and was able to continue.
Thanks for responses.

- I've had this with doxy.
Beyond a possible allergic reaction - look up their site for details. I know you said it's not like a typical allergy - but allergies can be all sort of things and vary widely from person to person.
It could even be the dyes, fillers or additives.
Also, take your pills and compare with a photo (not an illustration but a real photo) at the manufacturer's main web site.
Compare your pill with photo for: color, hue, sheen, markings, etchings, etc. Be sure it is exactly the same. Even some of the best pharmacies have to fight counterfeit drug makers who make many drugs appear nearly identical to the real thing.
LIVER SUPPORT? FISH OIL?
Itching can be signal that the liver is overwhelmed. Is your liver support in place? Maybe your LLMD would want to adjust that. Lots of water, too. And fish oil.
A warm (not hot and not even very warm) bath with some BAKING SODA may help. Be sure to rinse very well.
If you have the supplement Stinging Nettle, that can calm what may be a cytokine reaction. Quercertin can help. And Turmeric / Curcumin can also help to calm down hyper-reactions. And, of course, the wonderful standby: magnesium can calm down hyper-reactions, too. -

No itching but I was only on 250 mg. Probably you should lower your dose a bit.

Was on flagyl last month along w/mino and had terrible itching and puffy eyes. Went off both to determine which it was and definitely was the flagyl. Had to go off it, unfortunately.

- I've heard that Benadryl can help in this instances. I can't take it so I forgot all about that but you may still be able to call a pharmacist in your time zone (or one somewhere in the time zone west of you) and ask them.
Hope you feel better. -

This of course is a decision that you have to make with your doctor. My husband had all over itching with IV Rocephin and IV clindamycin and he was on each for several months. We decided that the itching wasn't life threatening and we wanted the benefit of the antibiotic. He dosed with Benadryl before each infusion to help calm it down. We kept an epipen nearby though just in case.

Thank you very much for your responses/opinions/advice.
I just heard from my LLMd - he said to keep going and use Benadryl if all I experience is just itching. Of course if other "allergic-type" reactions turn up I am to call immediately. But he didn't seemed to concern.
So onward.

wow, its so funny this is coming up with ya'll right now also...
I just got home from work and searched this very topic.
I started Flagyl last Saturday and I had noticed itching..I have been having some eariler as well...maybe the rifampin?
Anyway, It wasn't terrible but today as soon as I got to work I had such an intense itching I was digging welps on my arms and legs. I had to leave and rush to the store and get some benadryl.
I have never experienced an allergic reaction or what ever it is like that before.
Im not sure which medicine is causing it but I could definently say it could be the flagyl. I was even wondering if it might be because of the combination of particular drugs.
I also am in the mist of a yeast infection and didn't know it that might be causing it but it seems to be within 1 hr of taking my supplements after taking the antibotics eariler. so who knows, I'm just thankful it hasn't affected my breathing.
Good luck all, Karen (:

lots of neck itching, teeth grinding, and kicking of the feet at night with flagyl. That drug is one of the strongest and nastiest. Day 10 of 750 mg a day I found myself in the emergency room. I slept better for two months after and it cleared up my sinuses for awhile... till everything returned
