since i have severe insomnia and i'm tired of taking ambien which only works for a couple of hours, i want to try this GABA. so i bought source naturals of GABA at 750 mg and it says to take one daily.

but i'm a little nervous about this as i react to everything, so i figure i'll cut it in half first.

but has anybody ever taken this stuff? any reactions?

Yes it helps calm but be aware you may get tight feeling in chest/lungs...it is a side effect. It will pass but very uncomfortable.

google GABA side effects.

hmm, i only took 1/4 but i'm already getting a sort of funny feeling.

little drowsy, sort of like one glass of wine or a margarita.

1/4 is low but, hey, i do react strangely to anything, so slow is better.

Yes, it will make you drowsy. Be very careful and avoid driving until this settles out for you.

For now, be sure to eat a nice dinner and that may help settle out the effect you are feeling. Normally, this would be taken before bedtime only - until adjusted to that and then, maybe during the day but that would be calculated - as it can impair the ability to drive.

I have tried this many times over the years and, each time, had lots of trouble. Raising the level of magnesium works better for me.

I don't know when your cruise is but I'd sure not take this before going on the cruise as, for me - even in very tiny trial doses - GABA made me much more dizzy and my legs too weak to stand up. And, my bladder was not able to have full control. But, I reacted exactly the same way to even tiny doses of Neurontin (a seizure drug with similar chemistry).

Yes, a bit like being drunk. Just take a nap.

That may be because, as my ND recently learned, some people have trouble with GABA who also have stressed livers. I won't go on with other ways it adversely affected me but I learned after many tries that I just can't touch it.

So, taking 1/4 of a 750 mg might still be too high. They have a 100 mg. I don't know if that can be cut in half but I'd go even lower in dose if you want to try again tomorrow night.

It's the start to a weekend but you might find out if you can put the powder from the capsule under your tongue to dissolve and use a very tiny measure for consistency. I've used GABA powder before and did this so that the doses were very small.

If you happen to get the Trader Joe's Stevia in the small round bottle, there is a very tiny spoon there that would be the perfect measure.

Now, I'm not sure if the contents of your capsules are the same as the powder they sell. But, if so, you'd want about 1/16 or even 1/32 of a teaspoon.

Source Naturals Gaba Powder

0.25 Teaspoon - 750 mg

=======================

Here's on intended to be sublingual. Much lower dose, too. Still, I would divide it into eighths.

Source Naturals GABA Calm Orange -- 60 Sublingual Tablets

100 mg

Melatonin may be better at night to help you sleep. A timed released one, though. Also, very small dose.

Or one of my favorites that I just recalled again: Tulsi (Holy Basil) at night. Tulsi is very good to help the adrenal system rest and turn off the hyper brain thing, too.

Other options here to help with sleep:

My doc gave me GABBA for neuro symptoms. I have taken it for 1 year now.

Fwiw, he said the pharmaceutical folks ran a series of tests to try to find the LCD of the drug (lowest lethal dose). They couldn't find one.

You could take 10 @ one time & it wouldn't kill you. Of course, you will sleep for 36 hours---but you will wake up feeling good.

I take temazepam for symptom relief @ night (really works well) & as a sleep aid (works well). Sometimes I will take 1 gabba @ same time. I sleep like a rock for 9 straight hours.

So in my experience, gabba (1 or 2 tablets) is "sometimes" effective @ relieving burning skin & other Bart/LD symptoms. It is very effective @ getting me to sleep & keeping me asleep all night.

Time out! I misread the 1st post.

I thought Randibear was talking about gabapentin.
I reread the post & now think i was mistaken. Please IGNORE my post immediately above.

Sorry.

I've been taking this for a number of years for anxiety on the advice of a doctor that I used to see. He told me to take 750 mg 2X per day. It knocked the anxiety out and I didn't seem to have any adverse affects.

Shortly after the anxiety was gone I went off and the anxiety came back so I take a 750 mg pill and split it and take 1 2X per day. I go off once in awhile for a short time and then go back on. It works well for me.

I would be very cautious if you are on any antidepressants.
