My LLMD generally uses oral Flagyl for his IV patients, but I requested the IV form because I'd heard it's easier on the stomach (nausea has been a major side effect of my treatment).
I do have less nausea with the IV Flagyl, but on my current regimen it requires doing 5 infusions on the Flagyl days. My LLMD thinks this is too much IV in a day, and is changing my schedule to accommodate the Flagyl.
My LLMD doesn't seem to think the IV Flagyl is more effective than the oral, or at least not enough to warrant adding the additional infusions.
Any info or opinions out there on IV Flagyl? Is is stronger or better at crossing the blood-brain barrer, as is the case with most IV abx compared to the oral form?
Thanks!

I took oral Flagyl. I have been only on orals and did not know that IV's were better at crossing the blood-brain barrier.
You are fortunate to get IV treatment, as many ins companies will only pay for 28 days worth.
I did okay on the oral flagyl! It sounds like it would sure be a lot less of a hassel to take it orally.
Sorry, I can't give advice on IV Flagyl!

I have done both IV and ORal Flagl.
I would have to say IV was much better for me. As well I have the Nausea issue and I responded better to IV Flagyl. I also had to ask for it and my doctor gave it as an oral too even for his IV patients.
Interesting.
I did it daily for a about two months or so two times a day along with the other IVs and it did get to be A LOT.
I would try to stay on the IV if I were you if you feel it is helping you more.. as it did me.

Thanks for the input! I'm on my very last week of IV treatment (yay!), so might as well finish up with the IV Flagyl. Going forward I'll have to be on the oral form anyway.
The only reason I asked is because on Friday if I do all IVs, I'll be doing Levaquin, Tygacil twice, and Flagyl twice! My doctor did tell me to do one of the Flagyl infusions Sat morning instead....but I know that after all those IVs on Friday, I'll be too sick to even look at an IV the following morning!
