Today I have bad intermittent pain in my right ear (like an ear infection)
I am having herx symptoms as part of bartonella treatment (may be hitting babesia as well)
Anyone else ever have this? Just curious. I guess if it doesn't go away soon I'll call my LLMD.
thanks!

Yes, ear problems are very common with lyme and coinfections.
Lyme, itself, can be very hard on ears but ANY toxic infection can hit the ears because the ears are the very first body system to detect poison. Especially, when the liver is overwhelmed, the toxic buildup really hits the ears hard. Tylenol is also very hard on the ears (as well as the liver).
What antibiotics? Zithromax (azithromycin), Minocycline and Biaxin can be hard on ears. In addition to problems with the ears/vestibular system, Cranial Nerve VII is often involved and that can cause a great deal of ear pain.
More here about all sorts of ear connections - and what can HELP- such as liver support - see that 3/4 of the way down page one:

I haven't begun abtx yet, but I've had deep ear pain with ear spasm and stabbing pain for several years. That, along with hearing loss and tinnitus 24/7. I have episodes of severe hyperacusis.
I would imagine if this is caused by an infection, abtx would help it to get better, right? Why would these symptoms BEGIN after treatment?
I've read that any antibiotic ending in "-in" is ototoxic (harms the ear). Might be worth talking to a pharmacist about it.

Thanks for the responses.
I'm not even taking antibiotics right now, just herbals for bart, but it is really hitting me hard!
My ear pain seems better today. I had had this kind of shooting pain in my ear before when I was taking flagyl/mepron a while ago too...
Marrit - a lot of symptoms get worse once you start abx due to die off - called a herxheimer reaction.

- Magnesium helps all kinds of spasms. Magnesium helps lessen hyperacusis, too.
So much more about all this in the Tinnitus thread, including links to ototoxic drugs and what can help. Liver support is vital to ear safety - at all levels, regardless of what protocol is chosen. On or off any meds or herbs, liver support is absolutely essential to help protect the integrity of all the vestibular tissue.
And, although it can be tricky finding just the right medicines, untreated lyme (or any other infection that affects the ears) can cause major ear damage - sometimes permanent and not just to hearing - to all vestibular functions and that affects every activity we do. Addressing the infection as best possible, to the very best extent, is important.
It is also vital to pay strict attention to the role of HEAVY METALS and take measures to safely reduce those levels. -

My LLMD says that my "ear infection like" issues are Bart related.

I actually showed some low titers for Bart. I would say one of my top issues is sinus and ear related. It's maddening because when I go to the ENT they don't see or find anything except hearing loss that fluctuates somewhat. I allegedly don't have airborne allergies, and yet my eyes are always puffy and swollen and red, sinuses aching (aching behind eyes) with headache, low fever, malaise, like I'm coming down with a virus or something. And then, the shooting ear pain, spasm, deep inside the ear. And tinnitus, that came on suddenly nearly 4 years ago and hasn't stopped since. I'd do just about anything to get some peace and quiet and make the tinnitus stop! For some reason, magnesium makes me retain fluid, and that can precipitate a migraine. With the retention of fluid in my head, I also feel moody and depressed. (Kind of like the PMS problem with fluid -- but I am menopausal, so the PMS is no longer an issue!)

If you take too much artemesia, it can adversely effect the ears. You may want to discontinue it if you gat this symptom while taking artemesia.

My ears are killing me right now! I have had this symptom off and on since I became ill 4 years ago.

I have had ear pain lately more than usual. Probably due to the abx.
Have you had a blood test for Strep? I also have a sore throat and ear pain on the right side due to a Strep infection.
