i just got back from the ent. he said sinuses were all clear and not swollen. everything looked ok to him.

he prescribed nasonex. the pharmacist just called and asked if i knew it was a steroid nose spray. i didn't.

the ent prescribed two sprays once a day for two weeks.

can i take a steroid nose spray? i thought we were supposed to stay away from ALL steroids.

going the nose doesn't make a difference does it?

I was just going to ask this same question! I would love to know.

My LLMD said that it is OK to use Nasonex. It is a low dose and it works locally. You may only need it for a couple weeks to break the cycle of inflammation.

Sometimes my allergies get out of control in the early spring and late fall. Nasonex helps when Zyrtec and Singulair combined are not enough.

If you are concerned about trying the Nasonex you could ask your doctor for a different RX. Astelin is an antihistamine nasal spray used for seasonal allergies and environmental irritants.

If I remember correctly you've already tried saline sprays, right?

If you feel like it might be a fungal infection in the sinuses you could try treating with GSE nasal spray. You can buy it at the health food store or online at iherb. Nutribiotic is the brand that I have used before, 2 squirts per nostril twice daily for a couple weeks will clear you up. Helps if you have a cold too.

If "sinuses were all clear and not swollen - everything looked ok to him"

why would your doctor tell you to do this? It can be very hard to get off steroid nasal sprays once started. I've been there and will never go back to that.

Yes, it is very important to avoid steroids, even as sinus spray (unless an emergency).

Seagate has a very nice Olive Leaf Extract nasal spray. But, if it's not a problem, why mess with anything? You could try NETI POT with warm sea salt water (in a very specific ratio) for regular cleansing and to reduce irritation.

If for allergies, Quercetin (with flavinoids) and Stinging Nettle are amazing help for me.

I was on Nasonex for a month or two, and it was horrible. I did not know I even had lyme then, but I would not go near a steroid nasal spray now. I won't let my kids either.

I had horrible side effects from the Nasonex. I felt completely ill, fatigued, depressed, you name it.

Neti Pot works great for me. They sell them at Walgreens and it includes packets of USP Grade (99.9% Pure) Sodium Chloride & Sodium Bicarbonate Mixture (pH balanced, natural ingredients, isotonic, preservative free & iodine free).

I had infected sinuses and the doctor gave be steroid spray and abx. I came here and asked about this very same question regarding steroid nasal spray and Keebler told me about this gizmo. Never heard of it before.

I decided to use this daily and went back to my ENT for a check up one month later. Guess what? Doctor said my sinus infection was cleared up and everything looked great. I had to tell him I didn't use the steroid spray or abx but instead I used the Neti Pot.

He said, "Well, it's working great so keep it up". No steroids for me!!!

Thanks, Keebler for telling me about this on another thread not long ago.

I remember way back before Lyme I got lots of sinus infections.

Out of all the medicine I was given the thing that worked the best for me was saline solution.

I would pour it in my nose lean back for a while and it really helped my sinuses.

Randibear,

it is a no-no-no for you.Rememeber your diverticulitis could kick in again wit just a bit of steroids.
Neti Pot with camomile tea as often as you want.

Did you try X-lear, you can take lots of it and it works really great.

Yes, I agree with karenl. I take X-lear too when I'm having a bad day and can't use the Neti-Pot due to being out of town or whatever. It's all natural and works great!

I'm glad you asked this question Randibear. My symptoms have been steadily improving for the past 8 months, until this month when I started taking a steroid nasal spray.

I didn't think much of it, until I was reading a lyme magazine the other day and it mentioned steroids. I hope this is the reason that I have felt like crap for the last week. I'm stopping it immediately.

Nasonex is OK for Lymies.. but WHY take it if your sinuses are clear?

I would take the XClear instead as others suggested.

Asthma inhalers also contain steroids. Sometimes you do what you have to.
