In another one of my posts someone mentioned that artifical ingrediants can be toxic to our brains. Can someone explain this to me?

The only thing I do consume now that has artifical sugar in it in chewing gum. But I was thinking about going back on South Beach to get rid of some of this weight I've gained, but I guess that is not a good idea. I just don't know why.

If anyone knows I would greatly appreciate someone cluing me in [Smile] Thanks

check out some of the posts by Keebler. She's got a ton of links explaining why that stuff is bad. Lots of it has to do with liver toxicity, and our livers are already having a hard time.

i can't drink aspartame anymore - used to be a Diet Coke girl, but it now makes my neuro symptoms flare.

A low-glycemic diet is good for a lot of us. Helps me, I know.

I got very very sick on South Beach diet. The recipes were delicious but full of aspartame/artifical sweetners and it wrecked me completely!

Aspartame toxicity is not so much due to the liver, exactly, as it has such immediate reaction that the liver barely has a chance to deal with it. It is very excitatory and neurotoxic - to the BRAIN. Even a trace - even in gum. Nearly instantly and then the cascade reaction goes on.

Even a trace can kill brain cells. Anxiety and panic attacks can reach new heights. Depression new lows. With even a trace. It should be avoided at all costs. Totally.

Same with MSG. Google for all the names that hides under as well as all the cutesy products - and even medicines - that contain aspartame.

Thanks Keebler...you are so full of information, I am amazed!

Is this just for Lyme patients? Or for everyone? I've heard aspertame is bad for children so I don't let my children eat anything with it, but I didn't think of the gum factor.

No person on this earth should consume even a trace of aspartame.

Yep, in lots of gum (but so is a lot of other artificial stuff, dyes, etc.). Also check cough drops you may have around the house. Many brands use aspartame. Return them to the store and tell them you don't want neurotoxins in your food.

See what's in your toothpaste, too. Baking soda works just fine - melt it with a little water on your brush first for a minute so it will not scratch tooth enamel (a hint from my dentist). Just a fine dusting on the brush works and what lands in the sink helps keep it fresh. I've saved a lot of money cutting out toothpaste.

Why in the world do we need bubble gum flavor toothpaste or for it to be sweet at all? It just sets kids (and adults) up to want everything to taste like sugar.

One alternative (with a caution that it's for a piece or two a day - not to be used non-stop. Too much xylitol will cause some pretty intense lower G.I. symptoms):

LOL I know about the GI issues. When I was on south beach I ate a few too many pieces of sugar free candy and it had xylitol in it...ha,ha,ha...not a good idea!

Thanks for the tips. I didn't realize it was so bad for us. I am learning so much on these forums!

That stuff is horrible!!!

Also .. Do not eat sugar-free candies or cookies as they can exacerbate YEAST!

Well huh, I guess if I go on South Beach again I guess it will only be meat, cheese, and eggs, lol. I mean the majority of the food is low fat, no carbs, and high protien. Which is good for Lyme anyway right? It's when you started craving something sweet that is the problem.

I consume a ton of sugar now, I am a soda and coffee drinker, and I love my Reeses. I've been trying to cut back and drink more water and less coke but it's something I've been doing for YEARS.

Funny I never believed in that stuff before Then couple of years ago when I would have a coffee in the morning I would put either aspartine or the one in the pink pack (been around long time) or even the other one I would get these like a headache but more like a roving headache picture thunder clouds in your head moving around from place to place thats how it felt so i stopped drinking coffee completely then added 1 cup a day early morn drank with sugar instead no headache then I tryed adding in one of the fake sugars after awhile bam wierd headache again back to sugar gone. I did this for over a month same results.
So now I dont drink any artificial sugars in anything.

I think because I had lyme induced encephilitis once Iam more subceptable? I cant drink diet pop either same results.

I never believed this touchy feely stuff before but was respectful to those that did.

But now when I read something i dont dismiss it as easily as i use too i watch and see even longer than i use too.

google aspartame posioning... i used to LIVE on aspartame. i was always trying to lose weight, yet couldn't, so i just drank diet soda all day long to keep from eating...

then i read up on aspartame and i have been sick for several years, so i was hoping my problems were from aspartame poisoning. i gave it up, and it was SO hard at first, but now i can honestly say i don't even like diet soda! i NEVER thought i'd be able to say that! it really TASTES like poison to me now!

since i quit in january, i am no longer constantly nauseated... it was a HUGE problem for me. i couldn't even stand up most of the time without nearly vomitting... it was miserable! also, now i can go 3 hours without having to pee... before i was going every 30 minutes!

i encourage everyone to give up this stuff! it really is as bad as everyone says it is, and i wish i would have believed people sooner!

It's a neurotoxin like MSG. It should have never been approved for human consumption. But hey, guess what? it was... guess who's getting paid big time for it?
