i don't usually think someone is taking too much abx but if it was a person it would be like between 500 and 700mg right?
i never gave him this much...only 100 a day

The usual dose of doxycycline in dogs is 2-5mg/pound every 12 to 24 hours.
so 5mg x 20 lbs = 100mg every 12 hours = 200mg a day

you know thevet took out the biggest black spot and said it was mouth parts but it is 5 days later and there are still a bunch of black dots. today i was fooling with them and one looks engorged. i'm thinking each dot is a nymph...but i don't get whay they aren't dying and falling off...he has xtra permythin in him...and now hes on the doxy

My dog is 60lbs and she gets 200mg 2x day. We do know that doxy per: the Burrascano guidelines requires higher doses.
It sounds plausible to me. Considering you're intervening at a critical time, and it sounds like your pooch is under attack - I would go for the dose the vet prescribed.
I wonder for how long is your dog prescribed for? Certainly, well past the time those nymphs have fallen off...could they be dead from the permythin, and died engorged?

I have given my dogs half of whatever I take on TBI meds. But, they are 60 lbs. I don't think it would hurt your dog though and that is very aggressive. Wonder what this vet knows that no other one does.
I can't find a vet knowledgable about TBI's for nothing.

like are new ticks figuring out how to not die from permethrin
i wish i did have a magnafying glass but it is packed
he is responding really well to just 100 a day. the vet ended up saying since he isn't really bad with fever and seizures 100 should be enoogh
i hate to undertreat but i think this is waht they usually give him---anyway-he is responding
the dots are still there---oh i have enoght doxy for 100 a day for 30 days
i'm afraid to dig more at the dots..afraid i'll give him an infection or someting---plus they hurt him
when i move 3 days if they are still there maybe a new vet in jersy will know what to do
but in my experience many llmds don't know how to take off a tick...and all docs take them off differntly

I think you did your math wrong, L.P. 200 mg per Day .. yes? That would be equivalent to 1,600 mg per day for a 160-lb adult. (X8) A tad high, you'd say... Yah?
But with doxy, dosage must be adjusted for body shape... & metabolic rate. ;-) (Body surface area is what really counts with doxycycline.) This is why smaller creatures get Rx'ed more per pound than us 2-meter tall, hairless apes. 'merrygirl's post sounds atbout right.

kete-yeah...i actually did it right and then wrote it wrong...still foggy i guess and definietly exhausted
seek-the first two days he slept ALOT
then he started to seem better...his eyes looked better
i think the way we each respond to abx may be gene related
i had one son who got bit...in two days he was out of it on the couch-couldn't get up. then two days on amox and he was better
but everyone else in the family responds more "chronic"...long term abx with herxes

I asked many vets about dogs herxing. They unanimously said no they dont.
I have to say that in my experience they dont seem to. They tend to get better really fast compared to us humans. Like in a matter of 24 hours they seem to feel better.
but with that said I am sure that they experience a die off, but somehow they handle it better than us.
also you can not compare human doses with the doseages for animals. sooooooo different.
as an example. The dose for benadryl is 1mg per pound for a dog. so that means a 50lb dog would get 50mg benadryl. a 200 pound person would not take 200mg benadryl to my knowledge.

My LLMD (not a vet) told me that my dog needs 300mg of doxy per day to get the lyme. She weighs about 70 lbs. She is doing real good with it and is on week 3. No herxing. Doxy is anti inflamitory, so she seems more comfortable. She is 13 yrs old.
