I just started to take doxy and will be adding rifampin shortly. LLMD has prescribed nystatin (500,000 unit - 2 tablets 2xday).

Would like to know what the best way to take nystatin is. Can it be taken with abx or supplements?

Do you suggest that I start taking nystatin slowly and build up to full daily dosage? If so, over what period of time?

Thank you all for your help!

To me Nystatin is candy - zero effect.

Should be no problem taking it with abx or supplements.

Starting out at 4 tablets a day will not likely cause you any symptoms unless you are heavy with yeast already.

I started out with 4 a day and built to 16 for about a week... then back to 4 a day for maintenance. It was good stuff for me.

Nystatin did nothing. I have taken Diflucan for 2 days now and don't feel too good. I felt all depressed today, weak, foggy, etc. I'm on 200 mg a day. I don't know if it's that pill or the fact the 3 days of Malarone i get per month aren't enough to stop Babesia symptoms?

Seekhelp, I know that nystatin is not as strong as Diflucan. I have also read on this board that diflucan also does a number on lyme...maybe that's why you are also having symptoms.

Two years ago I was on diflucan (no abx) for yeast and I had the same symptoms as you describe for about two days or so, and then I felt really well for about 7-8 months.

I remember using the lemon and olive oil drink and that helped me to detox and feel better.

Thanks, Lymetoo,I think I will take nystatin with abx.

Glad you asked this one. I had the same question I was about to post actually [Smile]

So from what I'm hearing, we don't have to space out the abx and Nystatin?

I was wondering the same and have been spacing them out with my Doxy by about 3 hours. Doesn't hurt.

The only supplement to avoid taking at the same time as nystatin is saccaromyces boulardii (or any other "beneficial yeasts"- most probiotics are bacterial, only this and kefir or kombucha contain beneficial yeasts, typically).

Nystatin just stays in the digestive tract and kills any fungus there (such as candida). It doesn't circulate elsewhere in the body and isn't processed by the body, so it's more gentle on your liver than drugs that are systemic, like diflucan. Candida can be in other places (like throat/mouth, so nystatin won't always control it.

Nystatin only works in the digestive system, not the blood, it is not absorbed. Do not taker Nystatin and Florastor together or it will just kill off the Florastor.

Thank you for all the helpful info, Maria and Wild Condor. I will space the nystatin away from the probiotics.

It's fine with most probiotics, just not the ones that contain beneficial yeast like saccharomyces boulardii (which I think is also in Florastor).
