Hey,

My son is on Zithromax. It states not to use iron supps 2 hours before or after Zith. But, I was told to give him a time-released iron capsule.

His iron levels are low. I'm not sure why. But. if it is time-released, won't it diminish the effect of the antibiotic no matter when it is given during the day?

Any thoughts on what to do?

thanks

I could not take iron but got my levels up with Stinging Nettle, as per my ND (naturopathic doctor) at that time.

Iron supplements that the MD gave me made me so very ill to my stomach but Stinging Nettle make me feel better in many ways and the numbers on my anemia tests were fabulous after taking it for a few months.

Because it's from a plant source and part of overall nutrients, you don't have the same concerns as with iron pills.

Stinging Nettle also helps to decrease elevated cytokines (those cause so much pain, etc. with a herxheimer reaction).

From my file notes, so number may be different now:

Stinging Nettle - 288 abstracts

Stinging Nettle, cytokine - 15 abstracts

Stinging Nettle, anemia - one

Google search: "Stinging Nettle" iron - many links

STINGING NETTLE (Urtica dioica)

Excerpts:

. . . Stinging nettle leaf is bitter in taste and cooling in action. It cleanses the blood. Nettle seed nourishes and removes toxins from the kidneys. . . .

* Nettle leaf extracts reduce inflammation, in part, by suppressing the release of inflammatory cytokines. They do this by blocking a chemical inducer known as NF-KappaB, which alters gene expresion. This may be one explanation for the beneficial efffects this herb has exhibited in rheumatoid arthritis (Riehemann et al., 1999).

* One set of in vitro experiments on live blood using extracts of stinging nettle leaf exhibited its ability to slow down the inflammatory cytokine response caused by endotoxins.

In the same experiments, when there was no endotoxin present, the nettle leaf actually stimulated an immune response. Researchers believed these results could explain the positive effects of this extract in the treatment of rheumatic diseases (Obertreis B et al., 1996).

Thanks Keebler.

I have had some computer issues lately and have also evacuated my house for a few days due to an OD of flee bomb pesticide. My husband set off too many.

Stinging Nettle....okay.

I am waiting for his blood work to get mailed to me. I think they tested for iron in the blood and the level is low. I don't know if that means the RBC's are low as well.

I will look in to the SN. Hopefully it Is okay for kids, and it gives a recommended dose.

You are always so helpful Keebler...thanks a bunch!

RBC are low from some infections, especially babesia. Babesia will also cause low iron/anemia.

Oh, man, as for okay for kids? I had not thought about the age of your son, but envisioned him tall (so much for ESP).

Go to that main page at One Earth book. You could even contact the author who is actually very near to you. Very near.

If he does an iron supplement, be aware that it can cause stomach cramping and constipation. He'd have to work to offset that.

That's out of my league. Google can probably give you some clues in general but lyme really does have some curious effects. You might start a new thread with that question.

Good luck with everything.

Hi,
I have read that bacteria thrive on iron and iron supplements should not be taken at this time.

Please research this to make sure.

iron gotten from food is fine and probably herbs too are okay.
