And bright red! I know this is a niacin flush, but I am wondering why it is so extreme this time, when I have been taking it daily for about a week, with only mild effects.

Hi Shannon,
I think the effect builds up with time. That's been my experience, but I'm not sure of the mechanism.
Even no-flush niacin will flush me, or a small amount in with other stuff, so I avoid it.
Edited to add that even 5 mg of niacinimide will flush me, so I can't imagine taking 200 mg!
Take care. Hope it goes away quickly.

I had this happen to the extreme. I no longer take anything with niacin in it.

The effect will be less if you take it on a full stomach, or if you are extremely well hydrated. So, those are a couple possibilities for why the effect was stronger the one time.

Thanks, everyone. I think I had an empty stomach, and wasn't well hydrated. I also now think there's a good possibility I took 2 doses
within 5 minutes. Although I feel like I"m thinking clearly right now, I've been catching myself lately with bad short term memory problems.
I'm probably weird, but I didn't mind the sensation at all. If it's good for me, I think I want to keep on taking it. Although I read
somewhere that it can be bad for the liver, and cause low blood pressure. I did start shivering and shaking, which can be a sign of low blood pressure.
It's definitely something to take at night. I wouldn't want to freak anybody out with my appearance.

I have read that the niacin flush is a detoxification...good for you. I haven't experienced this, you might want to read up on the web or other sources.
