I've only used it with Amoxy. When I did, I ran 500 mgs of Probenecid per day.

Do what your LLMD says.

Kas, I don't think anyone here really wants to tell you how to take it "with" Ceftin as any prescription drug should not be added to others w/o the guidance of a doctor. And Probenecid is one of those drugs that more than a scarce few are allergic to. Posted by Kastroo (Member # 22825) on :
From dr. Burrascanoąs Guidelines
CEPHALOSPORINS must be of advanced generation: first generation drugs are rarely effective and second generation drugs are comparable to amoxicillin and doxycycline both in-vitro and in-vivo. Third generation agents are currently the most effective of the cephalosporins because of their very low MBC's (0.06 for ceftriaxone), and relatively long half-life. Cephalosporins have been shown to be effective in penicillin and tetracycline failures. Cefuroxime axetil (Ceftin), a second generation agent, is also effective against staph and thus is useful in treating atypical erythema migrans that may represent a mixed infection, containing some of the more common skin pathogens in addition to Bb. Because this agent's G.I. side effects and high cost, it is not often used as first line drug. As with the penicillins, try to achieve high, sustained blood and tissue levels by frequent dosing and/or the use of probenecid. Measure blood levels when possible.
I just need to know how to take it...I'd assume 10% of the forum buys drugs online in India without the help of doctors and dose them based on the forym threads...i just need the same for Probenecid...thanks

I'm not sure that it matters when you take it. I just used 500 mgs with my bedtime dose of Amoxy. So if I used 3 grams of Amoxy per day, I'd take a gram in the morning, a gram midday, and then a gram with 500 mgs of Probenecid at night.
Frequent dosing may be option too without Probenecid.
You could take a higher dose of abx at tighter intervals throughout the day.
I'm using Amoxy as an example here. I do not have any experience with Ceftin or Omnicef used concurrently with Probenecid. I would imagine the concept is the same.
I was dosing Probenecid low to be safe, but from what I've read you can use up to 2 grams per day.
I'm taking Ceftin 1000mg 2x a day so will probably add 250mg Probenecid with a morning and evening dose.
just wonder if it affects other abx I'm taking...Rifampin, Bactrim, Zithromax and Arteminisin...

I would really talk to a LLMD before adding meds, especially when you are on 5 different meds already. Have you read the possible side effects of probenecid? And have you read the interactions and such.
I would really talk to a health care provider first.

if any of us would be worried about side effects of the meds I think this forum would be empty but thanks for the concern
I did my homework and probenecid has no effect on the rest of the meds but will talk to LLMD on Friday but the problem is he is in the country where probenecid is not approved...so might not knnow the drug...

You can look up interactions on the interaction checker on www.drugs.com.
