I am just seriously looking at lymes for myself from a rash I just remembered having about 20 years ago and numerous problems since then including fibromyalgia. I have had 4 children. I am curious if there is any research on lymes being passed to a child.

- Yes. LYME can be passed to child during pregnancy. So can other tick-borne infections. If you suspect you may have lyme, see an ILADS-educated Lyme Literate MD.
If you recall the rash, draw a picture of it. Do not first go looking for lyme rash photos, though. Draw it from memory. Besides, while there is one classic rash that signals lyme, some people get other sorts of rashes, or none at all.
As for research, there are many articles that do discuss findings. I see that you posted today in "Seeking a Doctor" - that's the place to begin. Good luck. -

yes, i believe the four daughters (one is me) all got lyme from my mother.
i believe we've had it all our lives and stress triggered it.

Resounding YES! My 3 brothers and I all congenital (born with it). I'm 31... two kids. All but one of my brothers have now been in treatment (and improving!!) for 2 yrs now.
Go to CALDA's website and order the Childrens Issue of LymeTimes. Research symptoms, and get those kids to an LLMD if you suspect they even *might* have been infected!
A friend of mine infected 3 of her 4 this way. They were all on abx for a couple of years. Two of the 3 kids are now Lyme-FREE and the 3rd *may* be. Good luck! =)

I passed it to my daughter before I was diagnosed. We were diagnosed when she was 3 years old. She is 11 years old now and still has issues. She does well for the most part though.
I also breastfed for 16 months. She had many allergies to formula/milk as an infant with chronic diarrhea. She also had anemia of unknown origin before we were diagnosed.
At birth she had a very low apgar score. That is how they "score" babies at birth. She was very lethargic and didn't cry.
I had an unscheduled c-section for failure to fully dialate. Just odd stuff that made sense after we were diagnosed.

Yes it can, but that does not mean it will be. None of my children got Lyme from me ..... one of my kids got it from a tick bite, but all the rest have been completely healthy.

orrn- My son had similar issues as an infant. He literally looked like a corpse from 2-3mo old. Switched to formula then since he'd lost a bunch of weight. Then the chronic diarrhea started. He couldn't gain weight worth a flip. Diagnosed FTT and tested for CF and SDS...both clear of course. Off the formula and on table food we had to start wittling allergies out, that's when he finally started to plump up.
He was and still is allergic to tons of things, though. He's also growth hormone deficient. Coincidence? Knowing what I know now... I think not. Lyme and co. can really do a # on the kiddos. =(

Yes...mothers pass many things to their children.
Lyme is only one possible thing..not the worst thing that is passed, but surely one to test for especially if the mother has known lyme. This can be treated successfully.
Co-infections seem to be easier to get positive test results in children than congenital lyme. If they have ehrlichiosis, bartonella, etc...you know there was lyme at some point in the mix...which could have not been passed and treated successfully in the mother...but the mother was never treated for the co infectins that she got with the initial bite!
Also the heavy metal, fungus and chemical load passed is dramatic when umbilical cords are tested...almost all children born in the USA are born with passed toxins. Add that to boriella...and co-infections...and there is your set up for autism or other developmental disorders.
Each case is individual.
From what I have learned and observed in recent years, we young women and mothers need to do what we can to clear our bodies pre-pregnancy...to keep our personal load of toxins low...as to avoid passing any issues to our children. We cannot avoid all things nor can we avoid the accidental tick bite...but we can clear ourselves of pesticides, eat well, mnake healthy hygeine and environmental product choices, stay drug/chemical free by choice...avoid any pharmaceuticals by choice, unless absolutely necessary. It's the accumulating of all these things...when adding more to a clean little body...their immune systems are hurting before they are even born!
I personally think that soon it will become common knowledge that we Americans are poisoning our future population by contaminating our reproductive bodies...

Watch the movie 'Under Our Skin'. (Many on this site have access to a DVD copy.) Part way thru, they address this very issue. Much research & statistics out of maternity wards show Lyme disease can & does get passed to the unborn fetus.
Now it seems Some IDSA docs, like Shapiro, say "no". But the rest of the world says "YES!"
