no matter what time i go to bed, i wake up about 3 in the morning. i can go to bed at 9, 10 12 whatever, but then at quarter till 3 or 3, i'm wide awake.
i stay awake until about 5-6 then back to sleep until about 8.
my sleep is really screwed up.
what's going on?

Are you going through menopause? I think that can happen with menopause, right? My mom is having this problem.
Hope it gets better! I know she is having a heck of a time with it. She always feels sleep-deprived, but she never wants to take something at 3 AM, because she needs to get up at like 7.

nope, no menopause. just can't sleep. i wake up to go pee at least twice, toss and turn. i'm so tired all the time.
going to tell doc to change from lexapro to something else. it keeps me awake too.

That's weird, Randibear. I have the same exact problem. I have to pee twice in the night, wake up at 3 am and fall back to sleep at about 5, then get up between 8-9 am.
I do alternating weeks of babs/bart treatments. During babs treatment week I sleep like a baby. The insomnia occurs during bart treatment week.
I, too, am so, so tired. And I don't believe I'm going through menopause yet, though I'm 43. I think it has to do with bart for me. I hate it.

Cortisol Spike.
3-4am is the most common time for your cortisol to spike in the middle of the night.
try eating a bed time snack. You might be having hypoglycemic type reactions.
But ultimately you need to treat the adrenal glands so they can heal and sleep can come again.

I agree with canefan. Mine has been tested and is high. The only difference, I can't go back to sleep, then have to get up at 6:30. Sometimes I might doze or dream till 5, but that's it.

I take a product called Adrenal Calm and I take it at 6pm
It has phosphatidylserine, st johns wort, lemon balm, etc etc
It helps bring your cortisol level DOWN and keep it down throughout the middle of the night.
But I take Adrenal Stim at morning & lunch.
This also helps restore cortisol balance and adrenal function.
These adrenal creams for me were the equivelant to Buhner's recommendation to take Eleutherococcus(Siberian ginseng) @ morning and lunch.
And coincidentally enough my creams have Siberian ginseng in them.
It really does work and is a big reason for my recovery.

My Ld has me taking Seriphos at night and Adrenal Essence and Licorice Plus at lunch. Seemed to help for awhile, but lately my sleep has been bad again.
Posted by randibear (Member # 11290) on :
can you recommend a particular brand that i can get from iherb?
i've got to get some sleep.....
Posted by kday (Member # 22234) on :
For me it was B12. However, I still can't sleep in and feel terrible when I wake up. I'm told my cortisol is whacked as well, but had trouble tolerating cortisol. I take phosphatidylserine at night, but I don't notice a difference.
Perhaps I could add lemon balm. I haven't tried St. John's Wort, but I have had bad luck with anything with anti-depressant properties.

st johns wort didn't do anything for me either and melatonin made me jittery and hyper.
seems everything has the complete opposite effect of what it's really supposed to do.
strange. anybody else do that too? i mean stuff having the opposite effect?

Yes.
Chamomile makes me very anxious. Benadryl does too and makes my heart race. Nyquil does the same. I could cite many examples if I wanted to.
I gave a complex I had that contains melatonin to my father because it gave me insomnia. He enjoyed it though. Not sure if it was the melatonin or not. Melatonin is an anti-oxidant and metal chelator, so maybe that's why some have trouble with it.

randi...I know what you mean about gtting some sleep. I am taking Seriphos by T.E.Nesby.(2 caps).
But...I also take LDN,Remeron,Lunesta, klonopin, and trazadone at night. I still can't sleep very long, but at least it's a little more than 2 hrs, which is what I used to get.
What is saving me right now is...I can fall asleep early, while trying to watch a TV program, so I sleep a couple hrs, then take my meds about 1 am. Then I sleep till usually only 5am.
So I don't have real good answers for you, as you can see. We're kind of in the same boat.

I have exactly the same problem but it is much better now. I would wake up around 2:30 and stay awake almost exactly three hours. At first I stayed in bed the whole time but after awhile it was so persistant, I just got up and went online for two hours.
It was worse with bart treatment and the primary reason I decided to pulse my abx. It was one of those damn if you do and damn if don't scenarios. So now I take my abx four days on and then three days off. I have been sleeping much better.
I will have to try the stuff for my adrenal glands.
For regular insomnia the best herb I have ever used is Corydallis but it does not work for middle of the night waking up.

Has anyone heard of psychic phenomena in Lyme patients??? Many report this at that time. Just curious. I had it too.
And I saw a psychic who said, "Someone you were very close to was with you and they quoted the time---did you know that?"

The last 6 nights I have gotten up from either 1 - 3am. Then I just lay there and can't go back to sleep. Dr. said I could just be herxing or a side effect of anti. Zithromax Iv

SAme here - up at exactly 3 every night, can't drift off again until about 5 and then really weird dreams. Now I'm wide awake - it's 6:30.
Posted by jasek (Member # 12395) on :
Never heard of physic phenomena, except for on a show which says 3:00 is the time they look for spirits. I also have the 3:00 thing going on. It is very frustrating.

same here I wake up each night between 3 and 3:30 which is not a big deal I get up for work @ 4 am anyway !
on my off days when I dont have to go to work, I sleep in a recliner in a different room and manage to get 2-3 more hours of good restful sleep.
the one thing I found that really helps is 5htp

Get a 24 hr cortisol saliva test and you guys will see what I'm talking about. Your cortisol levels are bouncing back too fast in the middle of the night... so you wake up around 3-4am wide awake.
This shouldn't happen if adrenals are sufficient and your body's clock is functioning properly.
Most Lymies' arent!

That is what is happpening to me.
Posted by feelfit (Member # 12770) on :
awake most nights from 3-5 here as well this has been on and off since treating.
My saliva tests just came back and my cortisol levels were low...I am starting IsoCort to try to correct...this is a non-rx adrenal support.

i also have this problem.
in my case i have the impression that it started with flagyl and plaquenil. so maybe not adrenal gland?
i am worried about the fact that sleep is essential for us, but sleeping pills also weaken our immune system and shouldnt be taken long term. havent found a solution for this yet.

Apex Energetics has a product called Adrenal Calm.
Take it at 6pm every night.
It supports the adrenals and normal cortisol output. So at night it brings your cortisol levels down and keeps them down.
This is how you can avoid 3-5am wake up calls.
