My boy has his first filling scheduled for tomorrow. Of course it will be composite material (glass particles, resin based).
The nurse said the dentist normally uses nitrous oxide but I think I will decline on that one. Any comments on this? If anything, he will get a novacaine shot I guess. Any issues with this? But I doubt he will need it, as it is a small one.
Anything else I need to be aware of or to ask for?
He has not yet had Xrays, so I guess that will need to be done soon. I'm trying to avoid too many of those too.

I always ask for the novacaine without epinephrine because it used to make my heart race. They use it to help constrict the blood vessels and lesson bleeding.

Lots of times children can have their fillings without novacain, but that would be for the dentist to make that decision I'd guess. Often the cavities are shallow and the trauma of a needle is much worse for the child.
You can ask if it can be done without it. If not, I wouldn't worry. They are surely adept at administering an injection to a child without alarming him.
When nitrous oxide is administered to any patient (adult or child), only oxygen is given for the last few minutes of the procedure.
You can "ask" about it, to remind them, though I really doubt they need reminding.
Nitrous oxide is very safe. The procedure will be easier and will be remebered as more pleasant for the child who is relaxed.
The only time you shouldn't have it is after certain types of eye surgery.
