Has anyone ever heard of this? My DHs uncle just died from a bacterial infection that "beehived". I have never heard of this. He was almost 70 and they didnt know what kind of infection it was...and since he lives in an area where lyme is endemic the wheels in my brain are turning. Anyone know? Thanks!

I havent been able to find out anything and the familys too upset to push. The uncle didnt have any biological kids and he was adored by his nieces and nephews. My search attempts have been pitiful and fruitless. If i find out anything else about this ill post. I want to know too. Thanks for posting!

I'm very sorry to hear about your husband's Uncle passing away. He sounds like he was/is very loved and appreciated.
I've never heard of this "beehiving infection" either, unless they meant there were systemic hives caused by the infection or something.
You say he had a bacterial infection, but that they didn't know what kind of infection it was. Do you know for sure if it was bacterial or viral?
I just learned something new trying to find out about this - I didn't realize it was commonly understood in the medical field that hives can be caused by infections, not just allergic reactions or stress.
I hope you all can find out soon.

Misfit, I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
I've never heard to the "beehive effect" in reference to any kind of medical condition. Maybe it is a local term or something that the docs were trying to use to help the family understand what happened.
When I think of a beehive I picture a swarm of bees gathering together, settling in, and multiplying.
You can picture the same thing happening with any kind of infection. The bugs (bacteria, virus, fungi, or parasites) somehow get in the body, they settle in where they don't belong, then they multiply without restraint.
Did he get sick quickly? I'm sure the doctors tried their best to help him but if they did not know the cause of the infection (waiting for lab results) it must have grown out of control before they could treat it.
It would be a terribly upsetting and overwhelming situation.

Thank you all for your replies. Its not the kind of hives like with an allergic reaction. And i got the same mental picture of bees swarming on a hive when it was explained to me. He had been sick and in the hospital for awhile. He just couldnt fight the infection even with aggressive abx. Maybe when things settle down some more info will come out. He lived in the northeast and since were in okla we get our info second hand. Thank you for the condolences. He was the sweetest man and will be sorely missed. Id sure like to know what this bacterial infection was.
