I had an appointment with my LLMD today and he switched my antibiotics:

From Amoxicillian and Biaxin

To Mepron (1 tsp 2x p/day) and to continue Biaxin .

I am also taking probiotics 3x p/day (60 billion)

Any comments, opnions, or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you p.

This is a good combo for Babesiosis. Make sure you eat something fatty with the Mepron, this helps it be absorbed properly.

Some people with Babesiosis herx on the third day and every three weeks or so.

Make sure the probiotics are taken at least two hours apart from the antibiotics.

Good luck with your new protocol!

I took the amoxy with the mepron and biaxin. Mepron and Biaxin work well for babesia.

That was one of the best combinations for me. Treating the babesia finally turned my life around.

Just started this myself. Curious what people think about timing mepron + biaxin given that mepron is supposed to be taken with fatty food.

I was taking the medications together once in morning and then again in the late evening am and found myself feeling quite ill (diarrhea and queezy). Now I am taking Biaxin first thing in the morning (@ 5am when I wake up to use the bathroom!) and then, after returning to sleep another 2 hours, taking the Mepron with slight breakfast; orange juice, toast, butter, and jam and do not feel as sick as I did and the diarrhea has stopped! I have only been on this combination for a week. I am not a breakfast eater and have been forcing myself to at least eat the toast with the Mepron which has really helped.

ps. probiotics 2-3x per/day (total 60 billion)

3 hours after or before taking the Mepron or Biaxin.

I usually take the probiotics while at work throughout the day.

On July 9 I started Biaxin/Mepron after testing positive for Babesia. After no real problems with that combo, on July 21 I awoke with an itchy rash on my body trunk, which spread to cover arms, face, legs and eventually became solid red and more itchy. I could not immediately reach my LLMD, and stopped the abx as I had read a rash could be a side effect of Mepron.

My LLMD did tell me to stop, and my PCP I saw on the 23 said it was a classic allergy reaction. Surprisingly, he had taken Mepron for a year when he was doing research in the tropics on Malaria, so was quite familiar with the drug. He said if I ever traveled in the tropics, he should write a prescription for something other than that, as I should never take that again.

My reaction must be somewhat unusual, as I had few responses to a post here on Lymenet last month. Having been treated for lyme for years with many, many different abx with no problems, I was really surprised to have Mepron cause that huge a reaction. It took about a week for the rash to fade (zyrtec and benadryl the first few days) and I still have a sort of residual mild itchiness. Doc said it could take up to 2 weeks so should be gone completely soon.

So, don't want to alarm you (we'd never take anything if we seriously thought about all the side effects in the abx literature)as my reaction seems to be the exception, but I can testify that there definitely is a possibility of a rash with mepron!

Hope you do well on it, as it seems to be the best. Don't know what I'll be on next, as just have not been able to bring myself to start over yet.

Best wishes.

Ann
