My 13 year old son is on Lariam and has not had any adverse reactions. He's been taking it for a couple of months now.
I will say, however, that it can react with other meds. We were told not to take it at the same time as Biaxin, Diflucan or Nystatin. It can be taken same day...just not at the same time.
If you are taking other meds, take them a couple hours in between taking the Lariam and see if that makes a difference.
He takes one pill, once a week and has made remarkable improvement. He is still fatigued but definitely much better.

Piotr, I am also taking Larium. I get really fatigued the second and third day after taking it.
Do you have muscle weakness in your legs? I have this from Babesiosis.

Reading the side-effects of Lariam makes me cringe.
25% get adverse CNS side effects. Often life long.
Lyme can resemble TBI, increasing the risks.
And why does this drug exist? I never took it, but had adverse CNS effects from a fluoroquinolone. Believe me, you would rather rupture tendons (I have before).
Somebody make it clear why you would take the 25% risk when there are alternatives.
And they are giving this to kids? I don't get it.

Lariam is an anti-malarial. I was on it for Babs treatment.
A side effect that I had, only after an auto accident triggered PTSD for me, was emotional lability.
My LLMD just had me lower the dose. You only take it one day a week, and not every week.

Yeah, Lariam seems like an absolute drug of last resort, if anything.
There's A TON of stuff to be read on how it can affect the brain.

kday..I do share your concerns. Many drugs we are prescribed have side effects that no one wishes to experience. For example, if you read closely the side effects of Flagyl, no one "wants" to ingest it. Believe me, as a parent of a child taking this drug, we did alot of soul searching, praying and seeking counsel from others.
Our LLMD said if this were her son, Lariam would be her choice for him. We literally thought he was going to die. In her experience, Mepron had a huge fail rate and in her opinion we didn't have that kind of time with my son.
When you weigh the risk of Babesia killing my son verses side effects, we decided we needed to try the Lariam and eradicate the Babesia. It has worked in his case with no adverse side effects. He went from a titer of 1:4096 down to 1:256 and began improving within a couple of weeks.
The bottom line is that we can not use a broad paint brush for all patients because not all protocols work for everyone. This is such an individualized disease and everyone is affected in numerous and unique ways. What works for one may not necessarily work for the next.
Quite frankly, my desire is that none of us would have to take high risk drugs. Sometimes we aren't left with many options...

I dont have any idea what I can do?
Maybe some another medical? I thought that lariam ist best medical.

Piotr, my doctor does not prescribe the loading dose where you take several pills daily.
I take one pill every five days. So you take five pills a week? How long have you been taking it?

Imhis4life, I completely agree with everything you posted. I am very sorry your son has been so sick, and I am glad that Larium is helping him.
kday, other treatments do not always work for everyone. A knowledgeable doctor prescribes what is best for each patient based on their history. Treatment must be individualized.

Just wanted to post a quick follow-up. Our son started Lariam (one pill a week) back in early June. His initial titer was 1:4096 and is now completely negative as of 8/24.
I'd say that is amazing progress with a very hard to kill strain of Babesia. He was also on Plaquenil, Omnicef and Biaxin during this phase of treatment.
