Does anyone know what you need to prove to an insurance company before they will cover a PICC line?

Also, how often do you actually get meds through the PICC line? Do you attach the meds to the line at home?

Each insurance company and each plan within the company approves differently.

Generally, a letter of necessity from the doctor is submitted. Sadly, you may not be able to know upfront and may have to wait for the doctor to submit. The insurance company will come back with either an approval or denial.

Some meds are administered everyday, some every other, some a few days in a row woth a few off. It depends on the med and how the doctor wants you to take it.

You or a friend/family member will be taught how to care for and administer the meds at home.

All insurances differ, most will only pay 28 days if any. I was lucky, sent them a CDC positive IGEnex test. Also depends how well your doctor does on his part.

Yes, you do the meds at home, and home health nurse has to come in every week to change your bandage and monitor vitals. I also had to have bloodwork every 2 weeks.
