Will taking more than 400 mg magnesium at once cause diarrhea?

give it a shot. i've taken over 1000mg with only a mild laxative effect.
I would recommend getting magnesium malate .. its absorbed far more readily, and the malic acid actually aids in the the transmission of the magnesium from your blood plasma into your cells, where it is needed most.
I take mag malate pills that are about 400mg of mag (2.5 grams of malic acid i believe).
I use a pill splitter to cut them in half and take a half with every meal (so 3 halves a day). In the morning i take a multi vitamin with a little extra b6 in it too, because B6 is super important in aiding magnesium absorption. In fact, studies have shown you can correct low magnesium levels by taking b6 alone!

I take Glycenate. I think I should do what you do and take half at a time. I was taking 2 400 MG pills at lunch for the entire day. My question is should I spread it out more? But I think you answered it for me. It seems like I get bad diarrhea when I take too much.... Its hard to tellseeing as I am on so many things and sick to boot

- It is best in 2 - 3 doses, throughout the day as only so much can be absorbed at any one time and the rest is washed out and then not be there later when we might need it (especially at night).
I usually take 400 mg 3 x day to total 1200 mg a day. Sometimes, I need more, sometimes less. -

I concur with Keebler. If you try to spread out the doses more, it will help make you more regular. I suggest only taking a lot all at once if you are having a particularly bad episode of constipation. I personally take ~400mg 2-4 times a day, depending on how much I need. Taking magnesium can be a bit of a pain if you are on a lot of oral antibiotics for Lyme & co. that you take at intervals throughout the day. This is because abx and magnesium should not be taken within a couple of hours of each other as they limit abx absorption.

I'm freaking out a little! I didn't know that magnesium wasn't supposed to be taken away from antibiotics.
My daughter takes abx three times a day. How am I supposed to get her magnesium in three times a day too??
It's hard enough having to remember to take everything now. She spaces things out four times a day. I always put her magnesium in with her abx.

I agree.. the whole thing feels impossible

I took it with my abx for the whole time I was in treatment. Probably took me longer to get well! dang!!
