I am asking because I have never been able to give up caffeine for long periods of time. I have gone 2 weeks or so without but never notice any difference. Keep in mind, I am a 1-2 cups in the morning kind of guy and then it is water all day, so I never saw how having one cup at breakfast would derail my recovery. My doctor is fine with this as well. Her concern is the people drinking 4-5 cups of more, through the day.
I even alternate between decaf and regular but mostly do a cup of decaf at breakfast each day with a cup of regular on the weekend.

I personally don't think it makes a difference. I doubt if a cup of coffee would derail recovery.
If anything having caffeine IMO is a good thing in the morning. And coffee itself supposedly has health benefits. Of course I suppose organic is better. Cha-ching.
And since your doc is fine with it, enjoy!

I drank 1-2 cups a day for years. when i got sick, i tried stopping for several weeks. Tried decaf, tried half-caf.
I did notice that a big cup of coffee would make me feel a little more "jittery" when i'm not feeling well. But i haven't noticed any overall effect on my progress either way.

I didn't have coffee for over a year and I was a quad shot latte kind of gal. Once I started on ABX my guts have been absolutely torn up and coffee is instant pain and cramping. I have had a couple of "cheater" cups and its not worth it because I pay for it in pain and sleeplessness.
Also, I take sugar in my coffee and that's a no no. Posted by 'Kete-tracker (Member # 17189) on :
A small amount of coffee earlier in the day is O.K. as far as I'm concerned. Use a zero-calorie sweetener, pref. Stevia, & lite on the creamer, pref milk, if you drink it that way. I'D go with freshly ground organic whole beans for better taste.
The main concern is to not interfere with your ability to get the sleep you NEED. If you're very sleep-deprived due to, say, bad "neuro-Lyme", I'd avoid caffiene altogether until you're doing a lot better.
Some abx protocols aren't compatible with coffee for some people. So if you develop acid stomach issues, skip the java. It may help. Posted by bcb1200 (Member # 25745) on :
I think it is okay as long as it doesn't prevent you from getting rest / sleeping.
I personally have cut it out with the exception of 1/4 caf in the morning.

I drink about 2 cups a day, sometimes 3, just in the morning. It hasn't changed the way I feel in any way. I can't give up caffiene, killer headache. Been drinking caffiene for more years than I can remember.
But I don't have sleep issues, I could drink a whole cup of coffee and go right back to sleep. So I definitely wouldn't recomend it for patients with sleep issues.

i don't drink coffee because it makes me too jittery but I do have one cup of black tea in the morning.
On the news a couple of days ago it said coffee is full of antioxidants. If that is true, a cup or two would be good for you. But if you use sugar it would spike your blood sugar so I think you want to be careful with that.

The whole antioxidants in coffee thing is just marketing sponsored by the coffee manufacturers, trust me. We are in trouble, if people rely on java for antioxidants, LOL.
Right now like I said I do one cup in the morning, and half the time it is decaf. I also hate sugar in coffee. I roast my own coffee so it is naturally sweet and needs no sweetener. Sometimes I will make myself a cappaccino instead but that has even less caffein than straight coffee so sometimes that is a better choice with almond milk.

I did decaf when my LLMD made me because of my insomnia. It didn't help, so eventually after a few months I switched back. I have read that the decaf process isn't actually too good for us, so I just drink full caffeine coffee.
I don't think it affects us one way or another unless you're acidic. I happen to be alkaline, so I think that's why it feels right for me to drink.
So, there you go, a person who beat lyme and drinks coffee. I believe GiGi also drinks coffee.

Google coffee health benefits and the first page will be WebMD.
There is some very interesting studys that have been done on coffee and diabetes. They are also saying coffee is a very strong antioxidant. I just heard Dr. Oz say that coffee is the strongest antioxidant.
I used to add cinnamon and cloves to my coffee, but since I don't smoke any more I stopped the coffee because I don't enjoy it as much.

- So much depends on the state of one's adrenal function.
Coffee has some good benefits (it's great for the gallbladder) but it can also just kill the adrenals. So, if it is needed in order to get moving, to think, etc. it's not a good choice - it would be used as a drug. If it makes you speedy at all, not a good choice.
However, if one cup seems to work well, some can handle it. Great.
Organic Decaf (to avoid the chemical used in processing) is one choice for those who love coffee but who have adrenal dysfunction.
Green Tea would be a better choice for many and that can be consumed fairly freely. It has some caffeine but it's balanced with calming agents in the green tea.
Yes, coffee is a good antioxidant but there are many other excellent ones that do not thrash the adrenals in the way that caffeine can. Many others.
Oh, anyone with anxiety really should avoid caffeinated coffee. But Green Tea can be wonderful, instead.
Those with any kind of seizure disorder should avoid caffeine, too. One cup of regular coffee can lower the seizure threshold tremendously, and that's a very bad thing.
Organic decaf does not seem to have that effect on me -IF - IF - I drink it along with food. On a empty stomach, decaf can still lower the seizure threshold. -

Chlorogenic Acid for Healthy Liver and Gallbladder Function
. . . The primary dietary source of chlorogenic acid is coffee; the green coffee beans typically contain 6-7% of this component (range: 4-10%); roasted coffee . . . .
. . . The subjects to be covered are: coffee and tea; curry and curcumin; scute; . . .

I have stopped for like 9 months now. I LOVE coffee. I used to drink it black, 2- 3 cups/ day. before I found out I had Lyme, drinking coffee was the only thing that made me feel good. I get so much more done when I drink it. Took me a while to get used to not having it, but it really helped me concentrate. I will stay away until I am better, or unless directed otherwise.

The decaf processis fine if you choose natural water process.
Are there any tests to determinr the condition of our adrenals???

What's the logic behind it only being an issue with Bart?

For those that can't give up their coffee habit, whether regular or decaf, there's a company called puroast.com that makes organic low acid coffee.
I mix mine with organic chicory and dandelion root which brings a lot of nutrients to the mix.
No commercial interest here....just sharing a product that helps people who can't handle the acidity of coffee, whether from i.c. or stomach issues, etc.
Enjoy~

thanks for that link riverspirit. will have to try that one.
My LLND also said coffee is fine as long as it doesn't interrupt your sleep habits. I still stay away from it because I don't want to restart any habits. When i think of coffee i end up wanting something sweet to couple with it so I just say no and treat myself to a regular coffee once in a blue moon.
I drink Teechino's or Dandyblend every once in a while as a replacement, and herbal/green tea as a regular replacement.

I sure hope not. I've been doing a lot of caffeine lately.
