I haven't posted here in a while. I generally just ask my dr but am getting conflicting opinions. I am doing an IV anti-fungal and they mixed it with DEXTROSE!!!!
Should the anti fungal be more strong than the small amt of sugar?
It's a 5% solution. Can someone tell me if this should be mixed with saline instead, or the molecular structure of sugar needs to bind to the med or something?
I really want to do this right this med is expensive. Thxs!!!

Try googling the information on this drug to see what the mixing instructions are. The package insert, if you have it, will also usually say what it is to be mixed with. Some libraries have the Physicians Desk Reference, a large tome that includes the info.

I googled and got an assortment of options. I don't want sugar in my anti-fungal. Sending back I hope they'll take it as a return this stuff is crazy $$$.
In the first dose, I can tell my stomach is bloated and other unpleasant side effecst. I don't know if it's from the dextrose or meds. thxs lou

The reason I answered is because long ago, I was also given an IV med in dextrose and questioned it for the same reason. Requested saline instead.
There are definitely various options, but you are not required to have dextrose, for the reason you gave. Here is what the package insert says, for you and anyone else who is faced with this problem:
"The reconstituted solution can be diluted with: 9 mg/mL (0.9%) Sodium Chloride USP Lactated Ringers USP 5% Dextrose and Lactated Ringers USP 5% Dextrose and 0.45% Sodium Chloride USP 5% Dextrose USP 5% Dextrose and 20 mEq Potassium Chloride USP 0.45% Sodium Chloride USP 5% Dextrose and 0.9% Sodium Chloride USP
The compatibility of VFEND I.V. with diluents other than those described above is unknown (see Incompatibilities below)."
Anyone who gets a package insert should try to read it, maybe skipping the more technical parts. Especially read the interactions with other meds and herbs. This one, for instance, should not be taken with rifampin (taken by some lymies for bartonella). The little thing given by pharmacies typically does not have enough info.
