I was on mino for a couple of weeks and became so toxic, I had a mighty herx and the drug side effects of dizziness, neausea which were AWFUL - I have been off it a week and am still dealing with the aftermath of the toxicity, even my heart is still racing
Anyway is Doxy less toxic thn Mino as that was my other option
Thanks

Rianna,
My husband had similar reactions to Mino--not the heart racing, but definitely the nausea and dizziness.
His LLMD switched him to Doryx, which is a time-released, enteric-coated form of Doxy. It was much gentler.
The only downside is that it is not generic, so it is ridiculously expensive. However, there is a discount program that you may qualify for.
Its not available here in the UK, so hopefully others will come back with regards to Doxy V Mino re toxicity

How much Mino were you taking and did you start off slowly?
Posted by Rianna (Member # 11038) on :
Yes I started off very slowly
Did 2 days on and 2 days off of 50mg a day
Then did 4 days in a row of 50mg
Then I was SO ILL it was nearly an ER Job combination of Herx and toxicity, never experienced anything like it

My cardio dr says anyone with arrhythmia history should not take the tetra group of meds because it can cause heart issues with the rhythm. I wonder if it is the bugs that are causing the issues tho when they die off. He said it is on the list of meds to avoid if you have rhythm issues like long Q T or others.
My question tho, is it the die off of BB in the heart cells that cause this reaction? Or is it the actual drug that is causing the issue. I too was on it very low 25mg every other day 3 days a week , two weeks on , two weeks off, then started again and ended up in ER with heart rate over 130 for 5 hours. ER of course usually know nothing of arrythmias and just said take prednisone you are having a reaction. I just waited it out and took more Cardizem. I did feel great on it bone pain was leaving So I may try it again but with Doxy We all have to make our own decisions.

Is Doxy Less Toxic than Mino

- For most, yes, doxycycline is far easier with less vertigo/dizziness, etc. Mino can be very toxic to the ears and while some seem to manage that okay, if you don't it's probably best to switch. Either way, liver support is essential to help your ears. More detail in the thread below: ---------------

Females have a 70 percent greater chance of side effects from Mino
Mino is usually not a good choice for women
Doxy is just rough on the gut so take with food
Minocycline, but not other tetracyclines, can cause vestibular disturbances with dizziness, ataxia, vertigo and tinnitus.
This side effect is much more common in women than in men, occurring in 50% to 70% of women receiving minocycline.
As a result of the frequency of this bothersome side effect, minocycline is rarely used in female patients

I also had a terrible time with Mino's dizziness, nausea, etc. I was taking 100mg 2 x day and wanted to stop it. My dr. really wanted me to try it at 50mg 1 x day because it "hits all of the bugs".
When I dropped the dosage to 50mg daily, I'm having an easier time. Everyone has their own specific sensitivities to to these drugs.
Mino has caused my absolute worst herxes. I hope you find doxy is better to tolerate.
