I am beginning my lyme treatment. I have to work up to 1000 mg of biaxin during 10 days. i started taking 250 mg of biaxin friday saturday and sunday. today I am to take two 250 doses. i had my first one this morning
the 250 mg i took on fri, sat and sunday didnt bother me. in fact I wasnt feeling all that bad. but this morning after I took the 250 within hours I started feeling more tired, achey, my head and neck are the really sore spots in general and now theyre even more tight and sore. I just feel like such crap. and tight and sore.
is this a herx or a reaction? i need to know so I can ask my doc to change the med.

call your doctor office and tell them your symptoms. We can tell you what we think but we are not doctors.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Biaxin: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; confusion; decreased urination; depression; emotional or mood changes; hallucinations; nightmares; severe diarrhea; severe stomach pain/cramps; trouble sleeping.

SOunds like Lyme symptoms.
I went nuts trying to figure out that same thing. When is it a herx and when is it a reaction to the drugs. The best way would be to call your Doc. Head and neck are really common areas for lyme. I think it is a herx, but I'm no pro by any means. Hang in there.

My LLMD said most drug reactions get better with Benedryl - itching, rashes, swelling.
This sounds like a herx to me. Lemon water, lemon water, lemon water!!

The timing is perfect for a herx, and your complaints are typical for a herx too.
"Several days after the onset of appropriate antibiotic therapy, symptoms often flare due to lysis of the spirochetes with release of increased amount of antigenic material and possibly bacterial toxins. This is referred to as a Jarisch Herxheimer-like reaction. Because it takes 48 to 72 hours of therapy to initiate bacterial killing, the Herxheimer reaction is therefore delayed." (page 17)
I got this from a file I keep notes in. I remember it was said at the last ILADS conference and I think I got it from the ilads website.
# For Herxheimer reactions: 2 Alka-Selzer Gold (no aluminum) in 8 ounces of water with lemon or lime followed by 6-8 capsules of glutathione or 1500 mg or oral liposomal glutathione. 70% will fell better in hours # On the topic of water: Dilution is the solution to pollution. This suggests that in order to help our bodies detoxify, we must drink more water"
---We ordered the Alka Selzer Gold from Amazon and the Glutathione... haven't ordered it yet. Still waiting on the ok from LLMD... possibly going IV or nebulized glut if she approves.
I think the # one thing is hydration!!!
Be well

Sounds like a herx, after three days ... and biaxin is tough. Stay on the lower dose for some more days or take a day off.
