I am trying to cut out grains and dairy out of my diet. I am trying it partly because it will be easier on my daughter if she has someone doing the diet with her, and partly because I think I have a problem with grains myself.

This is my problem: I want to start drinking a smoothie in the mornings with bluberries and spinach. My daughter drinks this most mornings and we put organic soy milk in it.

I've been reading that soy can be an issue for some, so I want to find something different as a liquid to use in the smoothies.

I have interstitial cystitis, so I can't use any juices or kefir.

Does anybody have any opinions or ideas about what to use? Is organic soy milk ok for people with grain and dairy problems??

Or almond milk?

I like almond milk. My favorite is the "Organic Unsweetened Almond Vanilla" by Pacific Natural foods Brand. It is very mild tasting. If your local supermarket doesn't carry it try requesting it. My local Kroger started carrying it because I asked.

I agree about the almond milk. Is the smoothie just blueberries/spinach/milk substitute?

I tried cutting out all grains for a while and passed out all the time. For me, it was a big mistake to cut out grains. I do so much better with two or three servings a day.

Whole grains supply much need nutrients and a couple different kinds of fiber. That fiber is essential in helping to move toxins out of the colon.

There are many wonderful non-gluten whole grains that have a good amino acid (protein) content along with high amounts of minerals.

These whole grains also help to stabilize blood sugar more easily than vegetables by themselves. Grains provide more longevity.

Quinoa, Red Quinoa, Amaranth, Millet, Buckwheat Groats, Brown, Red, Black and Wild Rices are all gluten-free.

Look up Black Forbidden Chinese Rice & the Red Bhutanese Rice. The nutritional content is excellent and these will help fill and fortify you, even in moderation, along with lots of vegetables.

Having intertitial cystitis makes it so hard to eat a lot of certain foods.

I want to try the almond milk, but if I eat more than a few almonds in a two or three day period, I have major pain.

Also, I can't eat any fruit besides blueberries or pears, so I'm thinking that the coconut milk would not work either.

This is so frustrating!!

Keebler- I totally understand what you are saying. My daughter has to have some kind of carbs or she is sick.

My problem is that I test really sensitive for carbs, gluten, and wheat. When I eliminate grains, I feel so much better. It's just that it's so hard not to burn out on the few things I can eat.

I'm not sure what the solution is.

All the grains mentioned above are NON-gluten and intended to be cooked WHOLE.

As for carbohydrates, without them, we would die. There are many more COMPLEX carbs that are available to us than those in the standard American diet. Rather than restrictions, this gives us freedom.

coconut milk -- get the So brand in the refridgerated section of the health food store. They have sweetened and unsweetened. It tastes soooooo much better than canned coconut milk.

Since almond milk might be a problem, consider trying rice milk. Personally, I stay away from soy, unless fermented, since it can interfere with normal thyroid function (among other negative things I've read about soy).
