Are there any precautions to take when swimming in the Atlantic Ocean? haha
I moved to Daytona, Fl recently and a buddy of mine wants to teach me how to surf. So I'll be spending a good amount of time in that salty water : )
Anything to worry about (I just assumed there had to be!!)

I'm glad to hear, Canefan, that you have good energy to surf.
We only have ripples on the west coast, no surf.
I always thought that salt water was good for the skin. I guess it all boils down to what it is contaminated with.

Nothing to worry about, to my knowledge. It's not like swimming in a freshwater lake or river....the salt kills mostly everything!
I tend to think that being in salt water is good for you. Lots of negative ions generated by the waves (as with any moving water). The ocean has healing properties.
The only bad thing with living near the ocean, is the risk that your living space gets musty/moldy from all the humidity close to the coast. Of course, in Florida, that's a concern even away from the ocean because it's....Florida.

I drink 20 gms a day of sea salt. so000, just keep your mouth open, it will be cheaper. Just kidding, BUT , OTOH, the sun and salt water could be very beneficial.
Sea salt is antibacterial and antiparasitic. Not suggesting you drink it out of the ocean tho. Have fun, and great to hear that you are up to doing that kind of activity,

Oh, I think that will make you feel BETTER!!!! The sun for vitamin D, the salt water for detoxification, and standing on the earth for its vibrations.
Shuffle your feet in the water. There are stingrays in FL and they are not dangerous unless stepped on. When we've been down there (my family is originally from there), we've walked down the beach in the water with them as they swam down the shoreline.

Daytona Beach. The Great White!!
My mom lives there. It's the ONLY place I swim in the ocean.

I have actually seen sharks with my own two eyes, in FL, off a beach where people swim. Scary!
It was in Clearwater....I was out on the pier one night, and I saw a shark swimming around (the water around the pier was lit up). It was probably about 6 feet long. Fin on the surface of the water....exactly how you imagine a shark to look.
Definitely not a great white though. I would still swim there though....just close to the shore.
Maybe it was around sunset...I just can't remember. But it was my first time seeing a shark in the wild. Pretty neat. Since then, I've seen them in the Caribbean too.

Yes, among the precautions you need to be aware of is that that the rest of us will be more than willing to join you.
Sun, sand, shells, salt....life doesn't get much better than that.
I think you just created the first annual Lymenet Atlantic Ocean resort-fest--even if it's only in cyberspace.
