My daughter opened a new bottle of rifampin tonight and neither one of us read the label.

She took 2 caps, as usual, then a half hour later while cleaning up and filing papers, I noticed in the insert that they filled the script differently.

We thought she was taking two 150s, but she took 2 300s, bringing it to 900 for the day. I know we are not supposed to talk dosages here, but I am desperate for some advice. What should we expect?

She is afraid to go to sleep. I searched the old posts to find out but came up with nothing. She was increased 10 days ago from 300 per day to 600 per day. This is for bartonella treatment, along with 400 doxy.

BTW she is 17 and I am trying to let her take responsibility for things, at her insistence, but I am kicking myself for not hovering over this.

Thanks.

I would call the pharmacist and ask their advice, otherwise maybe have her drink alot of water to flush it out. I know that charcoal helps with toxins so it might work here as well.

Personally, I don't feel that she is in any kind of danger, just might feel the effects alot more than usual.

Thanks LuLu. I did have her drink extra water, and I don't think the pharmacy is open now. I will call in the morning. I think it exceeds the usual therapeutic dose I have read about, but not by so much that I would call poison control.

I will continue to research and hope its okay. Also I will watch her reactions closely for the next day or so ( I do anyway, that's why she is craving some breathing room ). Thanks

So, I think you're doing all the right things.

We have neighboring towns and even cities where pharmacies are open late, those guys are always willing to give you some good advice.

I'm like you, I want to let them do their thing, but it's hard not to get too involved..

Not a pharmacist, but:

You really shouldn't worry about 900mg. That's only about 1.5x more than what's considered a 'normal' dose. Really, there's nothing to worry about. I can't emphasize it enough.

How is she doing? She probably killed all the bacteria!

I knew I could count on my West Coast lyme friends! Thanks for your responses. She was up all night with the typical insomnia, and thankfully no real bad effects.

I checked on her at 7 am and she was still wide awake, but wanted to roll over and try again. She is now sleeping. So I didn't really get many details but I will when I get her up for her docs appt at 12. Will discuss this with the LLND today.

Still beating myself up though. I am glad it wasn't a worse mistake.

I wouldn't worry too much since she has been on the med for awhile. Hubby was actually prescribed the higher dose for 3 or 4 months last summer.

No ill effects whatsoever. Actually she is having a really good afternoon. We just returned from the LLND appt and she was not concerned over this. I am so glad we realized after only one dose. See there is a bright side. Thanks. I promised myself I would double check every script closer.

I believe Nefferdum here took 1,200 mg of Rifampin daily. [Smile] He survived.

z Man I take your comments to heart and thank you for encouraging me to use better judgement and caution. I have met many parents of teen lymies who struggle with the same things as I do. At a time when your kid is supposed to be becoming more independant, they are relying on you more than ever and hating it. The dynamics around here are pretty rough most days.

She has had her whole life altered and when she begs me to back off with tears in her eyes, I then look for ways to not get all over her case, and let her do some things for herself. I even let her set up her 28 bin pill case last week. I guess I should have done that for her before Sunday so we would not have this situation where she reached for the new bottle.

Some weeks are worse than others for lyme brain, I thought she was doing better.

(starting to forgive myself) Thanks Jill
