Male/45. I have always been skeptical about accounts of hair loss in this forum...until recently, when my own hair started falling out. It's all over the pillow in the morning and my hands in the shower. Really scary stuff. Cured the Lyme with Doxy a few months ago, but since then have various signs of low thyroid: hair loss/thinning, constipation, hair loss on lower legs (any other men have that?), fatigue, acne, very dry skin, total loss of libido. Just got thyroid blood test, will find out results Monday.

Question: does hair lost from thyroid/hormonal problems grow back once the underlying problem is treated? Or is the hair loss/thinning permanent even if I start on thyroid medication? Any others have any experience with this? Thanks.

I'm dealing with the same thing. Seems to be from an under active thyroid.

I found that high doses of biotin have really helped slow it down but I doubt it will stop until

my thyroid is back in order. Do a search on this forum..there is a lot of information. It seems to

be quite common unfortunately.

Your Adrenals are purposely slowing the thyroid function down (rT3 aka reverse T3)

Too much stimulation is no bueno for an overtaxed adrenal gland.

Just keep the adrenals in mind : )

My hair fell out in clumps about 1 year into treatment. I have very long hair, and I had to scoop it out of the shower every morning so I would not stop up the drain!

I began taking Armour Thyroid 60/mg daily and also started using Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner (it is made especially for hair loss.) Both helped immensely with slowing loss and regrowth.

My hair loss slowed after about 8 months. This was 2 years ago. Today my hair is as thick as ever!

However, my (ex) husband shared alot of your symptoms, particularly hair loss on legs and loss of libido, and his was due to low testosterone, not hypothyroidism.

Yes asked to get a 24 hour salivia test from your LLMD..most mainstream doctors think it is quackery. Even my endocronologist wouldnt do it! I had to go to a Nautropath. I am also on 120 mcg's of armour that does help and I also take Biotin 5000 mcg a day. I have been taking Biotin forever my hairdresser told me about it, its great vitamin, it also makes you nails stronger too!

I lost about 40% of my hair when I was really sick and after being on good treatment for the past year it has all grown back.
